While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
Re: While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
hmmm....I like that combo better than spacing out a v8q setup. Even if it does mean new bearings and hubs. At least they are more readily available

Just watch out for the e-brake cable pulls and the bleed nipples.
You will also likely need an adjustable brake prop valve to dial in the bias. My rears lock up first, not too big a deal in the summer but on ice it spins the car... which is really lame.

It's too bad you couldn't retrofit a prop valve off a pickup for when the car leans forward. Doubt there would be enough travel to make a huge difference

I've got a clean set of B5S4 rear calipers, carriers (100K mile CA car) and new Textars for sale if anyone wants to give it a go

Re: While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
Got an encouraging email from Hank today.

Hank wrote:We are back from the holiday and plan on hitting your motor hard. Here are some pictures of parts and spec sheets. As you can see on the "unbalanced" sheet, the weights were so off on the crank, he couldn';t even spin it. On the bottom shows the respective balance after adding Malory to get it zero balanced as an assembly. It costs ~250$ extra to add the mallory, but the only way to properly zero balance these 92.8. I had 2 other 92.8 motors done at the same time as yours, and they all needed just abut the same weight in 160mm/AAT configs. The block is line bored to .0026" which I feel is a great clearance for your application and slightly larger turbo in the future if needs be. The motor will come with full documentation like you see in pictures.

Yeah the intake ports on that one look awfully square for an AAN/3B/7A

Haha, I wanted to match the transmission... nice to see it's a little off the norm. Plus a black block in a black bay would be... meh!

I can't believe you guys just ran that as well. The new engine is going to be crazy smooth compared to the old one!

I'm pretty excited to see what this will do in a tall block, it should be pretty damn awesome.
What turbo are you going with, Dustin?

When I worked at a Lexus dealership one of the managers mentioned how they're balanced from the factory, and you can put a cup of water on the valve cover and there won't even be a ripple. Can't wait to try that out on this motor!

Think I've mentioned a few times before that I picked an EFR 7163 (waaaaay back in December 2013), but probably not specifically in this thread.
Just wanted to say a quick thanks to the people I contacted along the way, you all truly are pillars of the Audi community.
Monty and I sent hundreds of emails weighing my options. We exchanged data, videos and threads discussing what would be the ideal turbo for my needs.
I was torn between a billet 3076 and 3582 size, and the options from HTA, Precision, Comp and Holset and and and really started to overload a guy. In the end, the new tech and clean-sheet design of the EFR had me intrigued, but the MatchBot sold me.
My goal was/is twofold: pull on healthy stage 3 B5S4s, and a 4000+ rpm power band of 300awhp/tq or more. On pump fuel. Initial testing from Hank (not sure if I can post the graphs or not...) show I underestimated this turbo.
Awesome service and price from Mike @ Ringer Racing sealed the deal.
Here's a few pics he was nice enough to send me before he shipped it to Hank. Mike's since used these pics in various forum posts, as I think it was the first one to hit the Audi community.

Re: While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
Awesome, I hadn't picked that up, and I did skim through the thread searching for turbo but didn't find it.
I didn't realize the comp cover is vbanded on, that is so damn sweet. Quick and easy removal/install. That is going to be a spool beast on a 2.5L. Like way under 4krpm. RS2 killer.

Yeah, it's full v-band, modded to fit the TiAl size on my header (I snagged Hank's old personal manifolds... sorry Adam
). As soon as BorgWarner offered external wastegate and v-bands in/out my attention was fully piqued. As far as spool... well, let's say Hank is estimating some respectable figures after playing around with my turbo using an infamous 07k on the dyno and e85...
Hank wrote:Regardless, this is the results. 523whp and 540wtq at 320kpa tapering to 270kpa by redline(so roughly 31.8psi tapering to ~24.6psi). Cams are shit in the 07k, so that is why it is dropping off I am pretty sure.
On the street with real load, it is looking like full 300kpa by about 3800. 240kpa, or a friendly pump gas number of boost is around 3600

Re: While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
We were on dyno yesterday with a 7163 on a stock rs2 manifold and aan. It made 460whp with 30psi at 3850 or so. It would hold 30psi to 7200 on a 2.2L. The pressure is pretty high, but I think the stock intercooler and poor exhaust manifold are holding it back. I saw 440whp at 23psi on my Dads urq on e85 and stock intercooler so I think the manifold is to blame

Sweet - would love to see the graphs if you have any of them handy. What kind of EGT's where you guys seeing on the pump gas runs?

Re: While I'm In There... CGR Install & Stroker Prep
Very interested in this build as I have something similar with a tdi block and crank and 82.5mm forged pistons and efr 6758 turbo. I'm maxed out on cheep pump fuel at 450 bhp and 520 ftlb torque. Very responsive turbo. The efr 7163 is very interesting. I'm tempted... here is my build.

Hey Des, good to see you here.
It'll be pretty interesting to see how the two turbos' response differs on such similar builds. I'll be running pump gas as well.
