my2000apb wrote:you will need to build a shifter box ( tunnelmods) to use the b5 s4 stuff, although its worth it and feels nicer
the easiest way to do it is, swap the large ball socket from the urS linkage, via cutting it off nicely and welding it onto 4kq linkage. you just need to open up the hole in the 4kq linkage for the larger ball, and make a small bracket for the x-rod
No tunnel mods necessary. Martin Pajak figured this out in his 84 urq. I believe he used URS4 linkage coupled with a b5 S4 linkage the info is either here or on Motorgeek. This method works like a charm.
Craig, you misunderstood. theres 2 ways to do it without tunnel mods. when he says replace with URS ball he means take the 016 linkage, and cut out the cylinder that holds the shift bushing. Then you bore the hole to accept the URS cylinder. weld, boom. No welding the ball the the arm that attaches to the trans. Then make a plate to locate the crossover rod pivot point in the 016 location. Or you do like martin did and mod the ball on the trans arm....

Hmm? I never picked up a wheel from Tim. I did have an 80/90 sport wheel that wouldn't fit the momo hub anyway, so it went back. It was just borrowed to see if it would work.
I also found out why my coolant gauge doesn't work. It looks like the wire ripped out somehow, but it's now broken in two places so I have to run a new one from the bottom of the rad. I think that's where it's coming from, anyway.

I think the easiest solution to my stupid problem is an 87 5000 quattro non turbo tranny. Fixes the annoying high rpm in 5th gear problem and I can keep my sexy close ratios everywhere else. And since I'm not near 415whp and don't plan on changing anything i can pick up just the clutch disc. Cheap cheap... That is, according to this anyway: [URL]http://m.audiworld.com/showthread.php?p=19280019&styleid=11 /[URL]
There seems to be some doubt about it so maybe it's not true. Anyone swapped 5th from a 5k in? I did a 6th install in my 01E for the TDI swap but I've never touched an 016.

I did the 5th gear swap with a 5ktq .73 gear. I can cruise at 70mph at something like 2800 rpm or so. A non-turbo 5000 trans is the same as a 4kq trans iirc and contains the short 5th gear.
I am going to pull that 5th gear out of my transmission and try to sell it. You get first dibs on it if you want it. It's an incredibly easy swap to do.

Aw man, I always show up late to the party. I FUCKING HATE my 5th gear on the highway… it's nice for instant passing at speeds over 80…
Does anyone have a link or resource on the swap, dear jared would you be so kind to maybe write a nice explanation here in simple terms?

Unfortunately there's nothing you can do for a longer 5th, .73 is the longest 016 5th out there and you already have it. It's those sweet 4.11's you have that are the problem Matt, I highly suggest swapping that 5th, it's a pretty sweet ratio on the highway especially with the 3.89's. I have spares as well, but any 20vt 5k/200 car will have the 5th you're looking for. I do have a spare 3.89 Torsen 016 and matching rear diff for sale for anyone interested.

When recently cruising to vegas with my roommate and his urs4 I've learned to love my 3.89's a tiny bit, but the hate is also there. When we're cruising at 80 and I'm at 3k and he's at 3400 I tend to like them. When I'm just accelerating I really don't like them... haha.

I will take a video when I dissasemble the trans. The only part you have to be super careful of is not letting the hollow keys fall out of the gear assembly. Real pain putting back together

the 200 has the same 5th gear ratio as the 5k and urs4 but the 5k has a 3.89 final drive, essentially making it like a longer 5th. The 4000 and 5000 Non turbo transmissions have a TERRIBLY short 5th. Like, almost 4000 rpms at 70 mph. Cq's I believe are a litte shorter. Early 4000 transmissions had an even shorter 5th gear I believe. The only way to get a better ratio is a 6 speed, but I believe 6th gear on a 6 speed 01e is the same ratio as 5th on a 5 speed 01e.
What the fuck Audi

Gear ratio appears to be a little bit better on the b5 s4 6 speed 6th gear than 5th gear for a c4 s4. By a lot more than I anticipated, if this is correct.
BUT EITHER WAY. swapping in a 5k 5th gear is no different than a 200 20v trans 5th gear. If you want the shorter 1-4 gears then I can see it being beneficial. But that is it.

30% more fuel needed? So at 70%dc on my 630cc@730cc injectors, I will be maxed out on e85. Dang. Dad has ID1000s sitting in his car that I could swap in... Hmmm
