Project 200. *UPDATE*- R.I.P 20v :(

Whats up every one,

Its been a while since ive posted, decided it was time for and up date. Last time i was here i had been having issues with my 90 audi 200 turbo (http://theprojectpad.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=161) FWD 3 speed.
Car sat for a month, i began to lose hope and passion for the project. I was even considering selling it and just buying some thing newer. Until i came upon a 90 audi 200 quattro 5 speed with a blown engine. A few calls and $700 later, i picked this up.





After calling around some shops, i found one to swap my engine of the FWD 200 and putting it into the quattro 200. I picked up the car yesterday and just from the ride home from the shop, i must say once you go quattro you dont go back haha

My plan for this 200 are to make as much power as possible but i want it to be reliable for everyday use. Any comments, tips or advice on that is appriciated.

Yeah i havent done anything with it yet. I still have to go back and pick up the FWD 200. I figured its better to have a spare of everything, saves me time and money.

Dont forget can make you some money when others need parts. Have you had any luck finding an MC2 Chip? Cant really find anything myself.

Honestly i havent taken the time to look for one. I keep reading that ben swann is the way to go. I will defenetley keep an eye out for one. I would also like to get ahold of a stiffer wastegate spring and a bypass valve.

Cool the shop actually swapped the CIS and everything correctly. Sounds like you should just start investing in preventative maintenance and enjoy the quattro goodness

Yeah the shop i took it to had 40 years of expirence working with audi, porsche and mercedes. The 200 runs real smooth. At first i had a hard time finding a shop who was willing to work on it. The first few shops either didnt know much about them or didnt work on audis that old.

So here is an update of the work i been able to do on the 200. After doing some spring cleaning and playing tetris in my garage, i was ready to pick up th fwd 200 from the shop and put it in my garage.





After seeing both 200's in my garage and driveway, i couldt help myself so i ended up swapping some parts around.







I decide to mount my boost guage in a more classic way. What do you guys think?



I hope to have some free time this week to continue swapping the parts around. After im done i will be parting it out and eventually scraping it. The 3 speed tranny is already sold along with the driver side head light. If you guys need any parts, let me know.

Ps. I will be looking out for a chipped mac 14 ecu and bypass valve. Let me know if you guys see or have one.

Wow - Didn't realize how beat the old 3speed was. Hope you cannibialize everything, you will be able to make quite a good amount of money holding on to someone of those accessory pieces.

Actually the 3 speed has better paint and interior. In the picture it just dirty since it sat for a month before i decided to go threw this. The grill is just sitting in the inside along with other parts that the mechanic left off. Thanks! I loved the way the 3 speed ran so i knew i had to go 5 speed quattro. Hopefully ill have time to get my emissions and permit today so i can take a cruise up to the mountains

Whats up everyone,

I was hoping i could get some help with the starting issue i am having. So heres was going on. Car ran a few days ago, it sat for a couple days while i got my stuff in order to be able to drive it. Today i finally got a temp. Tag to at least be able to drive it around. I got in to the car and tried to turn it on, the engine keeps cranking but wont turn over. After a few cranks the small screen began flashing with this light.


The first thing that comes to my mind is oil pump not working so im not getting enought oil pressure. If any one could shed some light or point me in the right direction i would appriciate it.

So i couldnt wait till my day off to bink out the codes, so i decided to do it after work. So after cranking the engine for 5 seconds and placing the fuse in the fuel pump relay for 4 seconds. I was able to blink out the code, but i am having trouble translating the blinks into a code. I am having trouble with the begining of it. Can anyone help me out to make out the code. i would really appriciate it so i can get it running.

I have been having a starting issue with my 1990 audi 200 quattro. After searching around here,motorgeek and google. Ive tried to blink out the codes, and i believe it was 2113 (Blink Fault Code), VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number 00515 Hall sender in distributor Distributor alignment. I also did the output test, and everything seems to be in order. I even took of my fuel filter and bypassed the fuel pump relay,i saw a good amount of fuel coming out of the line. After checking the condition of the fuel filter i decided to replace it with the one of my 3 speed 200. Which was only a couple months old. I also took out the ignition timing and engine speed sender. I cleaned them since they were full of grease, but it did not help with the starting issue. Finally i decided to put the flywheel, cam, and distributer to tdc. Hoping that my timing was just off, but it did not help.

At this point i am out of ideas. I was hoping someone might have some tips, advice, or comments that might help me. Seems like all signs point to either a bad distributer/hall sender or the flywheel pin is not on the flywheel.

Well if you just paid a shop to swap everything over, I would ask to see if they had advice or would be willing to see whats going on. You could be chasing their work.

I did go back to the shop to talk to the mechanic. He told me to check the fuel and spark. Since the 5speed quattro had sat for a while. I am goinv to talk to them again see if it will help me.

I would try swapping out the distributor.

I was planning on removing the starter to physically check for the flywheel pin. Im gonna take the dizzy from the spare engine. How would i be able to check the knock sensors? I was reading a similar problem on motorgeek. Ended up being bad knock sensors.

Whats up everyone,

So work has been keeping me busy, havent had much time to really work on the 200. Yesterday i finally had some time to take off the distributor, both knock sensors and the oil pressure switch f22 and oil pressure sender of the spare engine.
First, i took the distributor of the engine, replaced it withe the one from the spare engine. Sent my timing to tdc and cranked the engine and still no spark. I disconnected the ignition module and connected the spare one and still no spark.
Second, i took off one knock sensor and replaced with the spare and still no spark. I took of the second knock sensor and replaced with the spare and still no spark.

I was gonna replace the oil pressure switch f22 but it began raining and had to call it quits. So at this point im sure the problem is gonna be the flywheel pin. What are the odds that i all the spare parts are bad. So by processs of elimination its comes down to that.
Is it possible for the oil pressure switch to be bad and cause a no start?
Is it possible to weld the flywheeln pin back on with the engine still in the car?

I thought it would be a good time to update my project thread. I have been spending a good amount of time trying to chase down the no spark issue i been having. So far this is what i have done/checked:
•check ignition timing sensor (G4) and it has ~.972 ohms of resistance.
• checked engine speed sensor (G28) and i wasnt getting any kind of reading. Replaced with sensor from a audi 90 20v non turbo from local junk yard. Has ~.940 ohms of resistance.
• I have set my timing marks on flywheel, cam gear and distributor to TDC on several occasions.
•Preformed output test and everything seems to be functioning.
• I replaced distributor with a spare that i have and still no spark.
• Replaced both knock sensors with spares.
• My flywheel pin is still on the flywheel.
• Replaced ignition module with spare and still no spark.
• Replaced fuel filter.
• New distributor cap and rotor.

At this point i decided to even make a LED test light to check the hall sender (G40).


If anyone has any tips or advice, they are more then welcomed! Thanks to themagellen, dutchbrobracer and elaw for there input. Its appriciated !

I was able to finally drive it and enjoying the quattro. After replacing the engine speed sensor (G28) and still not getting spark, i decided to double check all my work. Turns out the hall sender wasnt working as well. It didnt work when i replaced the distributor the first time because the engine speed sensor was out. I must admit its a great feeling being able to drive it after all the time spent tracking down the no spark issue. Hope this thread helps anyone having a similar issue.
