Omg. Found this today

Image

Don't see it? How about now...
Image

Yes, missing a bolt and all loosey goosey. I don't know how I didn't notice anything.... I had my family in this car! Scary as hell to think about.

Other than that she's up on the hoist, wheels off, ready to be disassembled and made awesome. I need one ball joint and two CV boot, both front, one inner one outer. I may also pick up new rear tie rod assemblies, gonna think about that one for a bit but it makes sense to just do it all once and only pay for one alignment.

:o Have had a couple mechanical moments like that too, glad you caught it and it didn't do any damage! I'd say, if you can, drop the extra money on the rear tie rods. Like you said, do it once, and you're going to absolutely love how it drives with all that nice new rubber and poly so might as well make it so you don't have to touch it again!

This is why buying a used car can be scary. I didn't touch the brakes but have only put like 5-7k km on the car. I am thinking I agree with you Shawn, they're only 66 bucks each.

Sigh, another order. lol. Now I will have literally everything but the inner cv boot kit (including front outer tie rod ends). It should feel like a brand new car.

Squeezed an hour in at the shop tonight, so the front subframe/CAs/swaybar came down. All it'll need is a basic cleaning, the subframe is so cute and light compared to the C4 chassis. The old swaybar bushings are garbage. Actually, all of the bushings are pretty cracked and dried out or all split up. The control arm bushings MAY have been replaced some point because they looked best.

Looking good man! Keep up the good work. BTW I ALWAYS put either blue or red on caliper carrier bolts. It's not worth the risk of having them loosen up, even if they are torqued to spec, I've seen the aftermath of them coming off cars, not pretty.

Dude! NSFW.... ;)

I also had the exact same problem with the caliper after I bought it. I had driven around for a few hundred miles and the first time I took the wheels off I noticed the caliper was wobbly, luckily my bolt was hanging in the caliper. I second with Ben and always put blue Loctite on mine now.

Oh, and the car looks incredible btw..

That is pretty wack, complete carelessness on someones part. Might be worth printing out a lengthy default inspection and going through everything (read do it)

There has been some scary shit found in this car. if you recall, the same side lower ball joint was totally loose and would shake like crazy at 70mph, which is probably what caused it to fail. Then stuff like the alternator pulley being half mounted, the 60-2 wheel being barely attached with one tiny screw holding it, the seats not having the gliders and moving around... lots of "Git'r done fix it later" type stuff. But the ball joint and caliper are the worst. Which is why I'm now quite glad I'm essentially disassembling the entire suspension and driveline.

Thanks for comments. I hope to have this stuff all wrapped up in a couple weeks of an hour here and there. I really love that this car wasn't winter driven. The bolts just loosen, it's like magic.

Hey look, a box of boxes and stuff! This completes my suspension rebuild... rear tie rod assemblies, front tie rod ends, fuel filter, ball joint, cv boot kit, and two new door handles! Plus some bushings/strut mounts for my jetta.

Image

Removed the front subframe bushings a few days ago. Control arms up next, then strut mounts. Then rear. And then, and then, and then... lol. More pics less text next time.

Aaaand we're back again. Also have a 7a fpr incoming from Dana.

When bumping the fuel pressure, should I just recalculate req fuel based on the injectors being 727cc instead of 630cc (listed right on the VEMS site, dats handy)? I think that'd be much easier than redoing the ve table. Especially since they're the same injectors, I shouldn't have to go through anything peculiar.

I just did this last night... 2200/5/(3bar injector flow in cc) ... Then multiply that figure by 6.49 ... Then Marc states "To allow for finer grain fuel control I usually use 75% of this calculated number."... That I don't know why but I'm sure he did this to your base setup... So use 75% of that figure...

Yeah I'm familiar with the req fuel calculation. So you just use the 3 bar flow value even though I'm using a 4bar fpr?

basically, you want your VE table numbers "centered" around 100 or so. the values have a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 255, so if your req_fuel is too high or too low you'll be bumping up against those limits in your table potentially.

LMAO ^^

Matt, I am very curious to see how the .82 housing acts for you. It will definitely influence my next turbo purchase since I'm shooting for some pretty radical numbers

Always go .82. I have a feeling I'm going to like my car very much this summer. Unless it is a stupid piece of shit, which is always possible for this thing. lol
