Awesome work Jim...can't wait to see it in person. I'm sure you're itching to drive it!

Damn you Hank....those parts look awesome. I may have to 07K my UrQ if for no other reason than to see that valve cover when I open the hood!

this does sort of make me want to go out to the local wrecking yards to see what they have in terms of totaled VWs... :)

Nice work, Jim!

BTW, is there any way to tell if it has a forged crank in the motor w/o opening it up? Anyone have a picture of the two side by side?

bad ideas are in my head... bad bad ideas... lol.

I havent seen an 06-07 thats not forged but who knows. upper and lower pan has to come off...Its a job that a set of triple squares and a 3/8 impact will make short work of.

Thanks, Jim. Will give the local yards a glance-over and see what they have. Don't really have the $$ or time to do all this, but a fella can dream. Building a budget TTRS motor and putting it in my 4000 does seem kinda fitting though... ha.

Not that it looks like it could go any higher, but is the turbo oil return above the oil level?

on the oil line return...debateable. It worked for 1.8t's all this time. Also you can fit a garden hose inside of mine. :-D

Very nice build, love the 07k swaps going on :)

Which hotside is that on your super40? 16cm2? Do you have any goal for a powerband?

I am also looking at the super40 for my next build

Re: Jim's 07K 84 Super HX40 4kq AAN story/boring words

Post by glibobbo21 »

OH, power goals. lets talk about that some. My initial goal is to hit 400-450 whp around 18-20 lbs. given my old dyno graph with the AAN and several factors at the time of dyno that should be easy. Heres a few problems it had, and a short history of the AAN becoming "history" for this car.
312 whp at 18 lbs(super hx40)

----time of dyno(definitely)
-Throttle cam was hitting a poorly position constant torque clamp on the silicone. it was easily 2/3 open as most.... Just never noticed til things blew up(spun rod) and i was removing the head/etc.
-Bbove silicone hose at the other end of the coupler there was a noticeable(visually) lack of clamp on the couple. \So boost leak. I had 18-19 lbs of vacuum at idle. I just didnt have a smoke tester at the time to find it.

---questionable as to when
-Broken wastegate tower on the ebay turbo manifold. Also a crack in the WG flex tube(post wg). Both things were discovered upon disassembly also.

Short story: I dynoed the car, ran great. 5-6 weeks later on a 110mphish(in mexico of course) I had a problem. At first now problem, pull was clean hard, and fast. I slow down, take the sweeping ryan curve ahead. Still fine. Then....RACK TAT TAT TAT TAT. shut it off. check the oil...fine..shit. Start it up. still doing it lol. I limped it home and parked it for the day. A couple days later i mustered the courage to pull the head first. I got it off and I threw a breaker bar and a 27mm on the crank bolt. I watched the pistons as they....wait, ones not moving! DING DING DING. rod bearing. SOOOO. The block still sits, I havent even cracked the oil pan off yet. Just kinda put it on the shelf and have forgotten about it unless some random part on it has worked for me(rad hoses, etc). Thats how i ended up going down this road, hopefully thisll get there faster and stay together longer. :drunk:

Oh and ill have a pic update this weekend for you 500+ "viewers" :hammer: :P

If the line starts getting backed up because it is below the pan level, it will naturally start to flow back into the pan as soon as the level in the line gets higher than it is in the pan. It is simple physics and fluid mechanics (assuming crank case pressure and oil drain line pressure are similar). Hydrostatic pressure will ensure that your drain works fine.

Match the IM to the VC and coat the fuel rail to look like the coil spacer.
