Aarons RWD car - 5-26: more tin and racing saturday

Post by speeding-g60 »

and here we go, starting fresh once again :)

it is too much work to alter the current chassis, so it was just easier to start fresh. that also allows the current car to stay intact in case i want to run it still :) i would like to sell it to the right person who will continue down the Quattro drag racing path, but i dont think anyone is interested really. if i move and get my shop soon and no interest there is a good chance (really good in fact) that it will get cut up just like the MK1 GTI that it replaced originally is going to be. and hung on the shop wall as art haha.

anyhow, got another rolling shell for $150 (again Derek shows me where) last thursday. and i had to remove the suspension for the PO as they wanted it back and it was easier to move with it on there.

and, i proceeded to remove the engine harness for them, then i got BUSY my way. and yes that is a MINT glass sunroof with zero rust. PRIMO condition. it was spoken for already as part of the PO's deal with Derek (but it should be for sale).

Saturday (yesterday) i worked on gutting the car and pulling all this non-essential stuff out of my way so i could get down to business. since the race car is in trailer, the 4.2L Quattro Corrado is on the lift, i guess right in front of the garage is gonna have to do for now :)

out in one piece is easiest for me on the ground by myself.

Image

Image

Image

again all at once works well. i pulled the struts each time to get them out of the way.

and today (Sunday) i got some other stuff cleared out of my way. the fastest way to remove sound deadening and undercoating.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

then Derek helped me swap hatches as the PO wanted this one to sell when i mentioned i already had a hatch.

Image

he wanted some of the sheet metal from the inside rear portion for whatever reason, so he chopped a little bit out for himself.

Image

and this is where i left off as i had to put the rear suspension back in using some of my spare stuff. much more will come out once it is on the chassis table at Vanderbecks shop, but for now just making a start and leaving it able to roll is my goal.

nope. i aint bullshittin.

i woulda got more done, but i spent part of Friday putting all new shocks on the 4x4, then saturday morning chillin with Derek and getting the new tires put on said 4x4. and i really almost have nothing else to do on this now until it goes to the chassis shop.

i will be looking at front (of engine) steering stuff as i need to lower and move rearward the motor/trans. i got a Turbo 400 for $50 to mess around with deciding where to mount it and stuff.

Derek mentioned looking at E30/36 steering and suspension, as of right now i am trying to decide how i might want to make my own "drop spindles" to lower it some and keep suspension geometry. i have an idea.....

but i also need to build a front subframe section too.... the dry sump pan is only 2" (less actually) from the pan rail of the block so that is a plus.

ordered lots and lots of parts.... and the full chromoly tube chassis kit.

Strange double adjustable rear suspension/coilovers

Image

Strange full front suspension with coilovers, spindles, hubs, brakes, rotors, calipers, control arm kit, steering rack, tie rods.

Image

got the SFI bellhousing for the trans, and cut the mock up trans up and gutted it. it is much lighter now.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

now waiting on the engne/trans plate to be drilled for my block, then that part is done. i had to make another one of these to make it easier to do.... sacrifices are made all the time in the big scope of a major project like this. it was a shame i didnt have a core motor and had to chop up a good one. same with the trans. oh well. :)

made the front engine mounting template, will refine once the car is at the chassis builders shop, then transfer pattern to 1/4" aluminum plate. it was cold, so i had to jump start the garage a lil bit.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and now i have a good starting point for the front plate template. just need to find another block to use now for mock up, as i cut this one up for trans adapter plate usage.

Why do you need a front mounting plate again?

how else to mount motor to chassis? rear mounting plate is adapter for trans to motor. the trans tailhousing has a 2-bolt connection to chassis.

no room for mount on passenger side i dont think with the dry sump there and exhaust manifold.

Gotcha, no room for the side mounts. Curious how this turns out, so far so good!

Re: Aarons RWD Training tires 1-30

Post by speeding-g60 »

got the training tires today, and they are a bit larger than i had imagined. 315/60-15, or 30 x 13.50. weather has delayed the wheels, 15 x 12 with 3.5" BS Weld Prostars. and the reason they are being referred to as "trainers" is that i will be using these to learn how to drive it, and also to dyno on them. you dont dyno on slicks.... the final rear tires will be like a radial slick in 32 x 14 or maybe even 33 x 10.5W on a 14" wide wheel. dunno til i get there.

love coming home to packages like this :)

and of course, Chub just cant be left out of the pictars!!!!

Image

Image

yes that wheel arch is gonna be "stretched" a little bit. more like a lot bit. making the rear bumper skin is going to be neat, but thats what i do, neat stuff.

Image

yes that is a 15" wheel there.... thats the style and that is a front one 15 x 4.

Image

Image

Image

Image

and the boy. Chub has to be involved like always. he wanted rolled in it. so i asked forwards or backwards. he said forwards, so i told him to brace himself with his arms. (slow roll in the garage). we went vertical and when we got up to 12 o'clock he kinda freaked a bit and needed down right now. he got out mumbling "are you trying to kill your son? sheesh dad"..... all i could do was laugh and say he wanted to do it and it wouldnt have killed him.

yep. think along these lines..... (this is the possible final tire choice when i go to slicks, 33 x 10.5W on a 14")

but i am basically building a Domestic 6.00 - 7.49 second car, using the Audi CQ body and 4 cyl motor. thats it. all the rest is an Advanced ET class car.

and just for you, Toph.

i had this cars wheels/tires mounted. man, those rears are rather largish. really, largish isnt really even the word. 13.50" wide tread width. its a big freakin tire.

and, i got the rear brake kit. Strange. Hawk Performance pads. 4 piston calipers. should fit the bill nicely.

i was playin around when i unloaded, and this is what the rear looks like next to the 4.2L C5 A6 my wife drives. i can picture doing it like Paavola and Ecklund each did with the newer body. would be awesome for sure to do it with a sedan body!!!

this car is basically being built to cert at 6.00 - 7.50, Top Sportsman or Door Slammer type chassis. but i choose to use an Audi body and 4 cyl motor, just because i can never just "Go with the Flow".
