20vt B3 (The Bandit)
Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) Major progress!
Depends on when my MS gets here. Was hoping to have it for this weekend, but Eric hit a few snags. If he was able to finish testing it today, and ships it tomorrow its still a possibility to recieve it on Sat. It wont take long to wire it up, so keep your fingers crossed.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) Major progress!
Well today Shawn came up again, and we started to work on the wiring. Not a fun thing. We have the entire NG harness opened up, and ready to figure out what wires we need. The problem we are running into now is the harnesses for the CIS ecu and the ignition ecu turn into one harness, which has a few wires that lead to the fuse/relay panel. Im am now in the process of looking through the wireing diagrams in the bently to figure out what the wires going to the fuse panlel are for. Yay, lots of fun...
We did how ever get the freshly wrapped UrQ downpipe installed. After searching for the gasket in my parts colection of course.
Only thing the sucked, was I eneded up having to pull the intake manifold to be able to get it in. At least with out it in, I had a good shot for the pic

And for those who have asked about how much needed to come off of the intake manifold for the spacer, I took a couple pics of that. Not the greatest, but they do ilastrate the point.

The intake is all bolted back on, but I need to get a long ball end allen socket to torque it down. With the down pipe in, I cant get to the bolts with a standard allen socket.
Another kick in the jock was the fact that now having time to look over the setup a little closer, I need to find another bent tie rod, and the one I have is not bent enough, and will not clear the WG flex pipe. Just like normal, one step forward and two steps back ...

why spend good money going after a bent tie rod when you can bend it yourself? so tweek the tie rod to clear the DP, its not hard. If you need advice pm me.

Dave, you have PM.
I am really hoping wiring in the MS ECU is as easy as I have been reading. I should have it today, but not going to be able to install it for 2 weeks, My daughters birthday party is this coming Sat, and the wife picked up tickets for a local harvest festival on sunday. I would rather be plugging away at the car, but we all know the saying, happy wife, happy life...

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) moving slow again
Well, do to some work, and family related issues, progress has slowed to a crawl again. The past few weekends, I have ended up having to work Saturdays, so needless to say, working nights, and then working an extra 8-10 hours attached to that will really take it out of you. I ended up having little to no energy on Sundays to do much of anything. At least I was able to take car of a few things financially with the OT & DT I was getting.
On to what you guys care about in these threads. I was able to collect a number of things needed to get this project together over the past few weeks. Not to mention that I had a slow period at work and was able to get a few minor loose ends tied up with the intake manifold. And now, on to the pics.
Here is what I did to the intake manifold.
I had to grind away the rear part on the manifold that was raised to allow the low profile injectors to fit.

I then modified the old cruise control connector to be an adapter for the throttle linkage system and use the 80's throttle cable. Not pretty, but will do the job.

And because I was standing around for about 6 out of 8 hours that night, I tried my hand at some painting. looks a lot better in the pic 8)

Now on to the parts that I have acquired. Should be fun making everything fit, and look right.
The pair of 205/50/15's I needed.

An AEM wide band

440cc injectors pulled from some Volvo

The AAN/B4 V6 TPS and pigtail, needed for the mega squirt

The CXRacing 2.5" intercooler

most of a CXRacing 2.5" piping kit, mostly used, but some new

And last but not least, the turboXS BOV with 2.5" adaptor pipe.

And I almost forgot, I picked up a divider board for the MS so that I can use the factory FW sensors with the MS. Just need to order the parts to put on it. Will be a nice upgrade when it is time.
A huge thanks to all those who have helped me to acquire all of these parts, you all know who you are.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) moving slow again
Finaly got some time to play with the bandit yesterday. Got off work, got the wife and kid ready, and then they dropped me off with the car, and went to do their thing.
So I set out to figure out how to fit this intercooler in the bumper. Not the easiest thing, as I found out. Had to do quite a bit of cutting, but I did finaly get it to fit. My last resort was to cut the bumper cover, but it didnt come to that, so Im pretty pleased.
first thing I did was to cut the metal cross brace in the front to allow the intercooler to sit inwarad a little more. then I cound some old alum. stapps I had made up for somthing(dont remember what) and bent them up to allow the intercooler to hang with a little movement. I really didnt want to smash it, so figured a little movement would keep me from doing that.

Then I took the alum bumper insert out of the bumper cover and trimmed the lip off of the bottom thinking that would be enough, I was wrong.

After 2 hours of trimming the alum bumper, I finaly got the bumper and cover to fit. Its tight, but I can still move the intercooler a little.

Yes, as you can see, it is a little off center where it is hanging.

And just for fun, here is what I had to remove to make this fit. Took quite a bit of time, with only a drill and an angle grinder.

Here was my proud poppa moment of the month, looking at kiddy cars, and my daughter jumps into this!

LMAO. You have taught her well.
I remember when I was doing the intercooler on my car. It was a royal PITA.
Looking good. Get it running! I better not be on VEMS before this is done

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) moving slow again
Yesterday Shawn and I had some fun putting a few things back on the car, and figuring how to run the intercooler piping in an already cramped space. We managed to get the problem solved, now I just need to take a few of the pieces to work, and weld them together so I dont have a cluster of couplers any more. Here are so pics from he days progress.
Bumper got more ground off of it,

route the piping all around to make it fit.

Make sure the modded bumper insert clears the intercooler

While I was messing around trying to figure out what pipe goes where, shawn mounted the intake manifold, and buttoned up the oil lines for the turbo. My gaskets must have grown legs and walked away, because I have no idea where they were. So I ordered another set from AutohausAZ and they were perfect.
After Shawn mounted the intake, I figured it would be a good time to try out my little linkage adapter. So I snapped it onto the linkage ball, and got the cable to go into the slot, and presto! I now have a perfectly working setup with a factory feeling peddle, not to mention I get to use the B3 throttle cable with out modding it! Here is a pic, not the greatest, but you get the jist of it!

With working last night, there is no way I can attempt to work on the car today. little to no sleep, and ended up welding for a good part of last night. For some reason that really takes it out of me lately. :(
Hopefully next weekend I will have my exhaust and start on the wiring. After that, connect the plumbing, and add all fluids. Keep your fingers crossed thing work out.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) moving slow again
Here are some better shots of how the linkage to cable adaptor worked out. Pretty simple really, just took a linkage conector that had a threaded end, and made up a little sheet metal piece that would allow the cable to hook into it. After getting the cable in, I just bent over the tabs sticking up to keep the cable in place.

Well, really need to buckle down and get this thing running. My wife is now 8 weeks pregnant with our 2nd child. Now not only do I have to find a bigger place, but need to get this going ASAFP! Didnt want to tell too many people until we knew everything was good. We lost 2 last year, so was a little aprehensive this time. As of now all looks good!

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) really need to get to work!
I want to thank everyone for your kind words, but we got bad news this weekend, and ended up in the hospital for most of the day yesterday. My wife misscarried, this is the 3rd time in under 2 years. We are really not going to try any more. It sucks for me, but it really takes a toll on my wife. I just cant see putting her through this again.
Now on to what we come here for, the car. I have been trying to fit this intercooler now for a while. My last resort will be to modify the bumper. I REALLY want this to look stock, so drastic measures my be in order. Just for referance, the cooler started off like this.

Well, with this setup, and silicone 90s, there was no way possible to put the fog lights in.
So I ordered some car 90s, and cut off the straight outlets, and tacked on the cast 90s.

Much to my dismay, it was still just a little too long to fit in with the fogs.
Now, the intercooler looks like this.

Not the greatest pic, I know, but you get the point. I had to cut the cast 90s down as clost to the turn as possible. I then fully welded them on, as there was really no point in just tacking them. If this doesnt work, then I am kind of screwed, and will have to find a different intercooler. I removed more than an inch from both cast 90s, so I think I will be good now. Keep your fingers crossed.

Re: 20vt B3 (The Black Bandit) IT FITS!!
So, I got a chance to get over to the car this morning to test fit the freshly modified intercooler. Here is that happened
Step 1, mount intercooler

Step 2, mount bumper over intercooler

Step 3, aproach slowly with fog lights, and pray that they clear the intercooler

YAY!! THEY FIT!!
There isnt much for clearance, but nothing hits as of now.

I will play around with pipe routing maybe this weekend. Hopefully it doesnt snow.

Looks great! Glad I didn't let you speed drill the front bumper. Guess I've got some wiring to do this weekend huh?
