So, I have a little anodizing setup now

Post by Zerb »

been getting the pieces of this anodizing setup together for the last few weeks, and i finally got the time to make some shit happen last night with it.

stripped the black anodizing off in the ultrasonic parts cleaner filled with some greased lightning, then just dropped the parts into the ano bath. these are the results.

hope to get some more time to do some other things this evening, little brackets and stuff that i want red in the bay for this new setup. should be a good time.

did some more little pieces last night. some of the pieces werent attached well to their hanging wires, and didnt anodize as well, thus didnt take the red dye well.

The anodizing surely takes much longer and is a little to no forgiveness process versus powder coating. But I sure am glad I finally pulled the trigger on the Ano setup...The results are well worth the time.

Very cool, I've always wanted to get a setup too. Where did you buy your stuff from?

i have a 5 gallon bucket with 3 gallons of solution in there. .75 gallons of battery acid, 2.25 gallons of distilled water. got 2 aluminum plates bent to the curvature of the bucket on the inside for the cathodes, and an aluminum rack that sits on the top of the bucket that i can suspend the parts from.

Image

the parts are stripped, degreased, in an ultrasonic parts cleaner from harbor freight thats full of Greased Lightning....shit take anodizing right off aluminum by the way if anyones curious.

the power supply is a 0-30V 0-5amp ebay special, 70 bucks shipped from cali to my door.

then ive just got some other spare buckets that i hold the parts over and spray with distilled water in between tanks. other then that, i have an oster electric kettle that i use to heat the dye up to 140, then i have a pot on the stovetop that i use the oven for baking powdercoated stuff in to heat the sealer up to about 200 degrees. and thats the entire process. the parts sit in the ano bath for 2 hours, which is the longest part of the process.

I'll have to read up some more.

What's the air line/pushlocks for?

Agitation. Prolly not needed for a small setup like this. But why not. Keep bubbles from sitting on the parts and messing up the anodize layer from forming smooth.

Got one of the hose ends for the coolant system done today. First full AN fitting I've attempted to do. I like it. It will go awesome with the rest of the engine bay color scheme. And now I just have to do about 10 more hose ends the same way. Lol.
