Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
Well, today was a good news day.
I pulled the head and only found damage on the #1 piston and nowhere else at all! Here are some pics of everything...

This is #1:

While, it does not look pretty. Everything else looks really clean including the head.
This is #1 on the head:

SO, after much thought I've decided to just throw another set of stock pistons in, new rings, hone and SS valves. Throw it together and keep learning to tune. I'd much rather make mistakes on my "cheaper" engine than a fully built one. SO if all goes well I will be back together sooner than later.
So I guess the ultimate question is what was the actual cause of the DET. Where 2-5 had ZERO evidence of DET events, I'm really starting to question whether or not the #1 injector was freaking out, be it because of a particle jamming up the pintle or a physical malfunction, I don't know. Of course overboosting was a contributing factor, but when I actually lost compression was after I made it home. I was doing a freeway onramp pull and I had a bad misfire, then it started to miss. Anyways, I may take a lab scope and watch the pintle movement, but right now as far as I'm concerned, this thing is going to get an injector upgrade anyways. I want E85.
PS: The turbo had NO damage either, so I'm super lucky and happy.

Damn you, lol. That would never happen to me.
That's awesome though. I would maybe get the injectors balanced. What size are they and did you buy them used?
How was the compression on the other cylinders? You could just replace the one piston and put all new rings in and hone. See what they look like when you pull it apart I guess.

LOL, well they are brand new Siemens 60lb injectors. I did have to take them off right before BBQ to mess with something (I can't remember what), but either way. I'm going to get new injectors before this is all said and done.

Can't run E85 properly on those itty bitty 60lbers. 1200c for me!
Your damage is worse than mine, but glad it isn't as bad as you'd thought. Picking my car up from Hank at Thanksgiving after it gets tuned on his new Dyno!

Right on Darin! That's awesome man! Didn't you have a cut on your head though? I thought something weird happened to where you had to get it welded or something. Maybe my memory isn't serving correctly right now. LOL

That was when I blew the head gasket. The latest (geesh, it sounds like a broken record) was I believe I had a plug failure that cause some damage in #5. Hone and re-ring is being done. I had planned on oversized pistons, but since the damage was less than expected it was decided do a smaller rebuild.

Agreed

SO as things sit right now I'm hoping to be back on the road before the end of the year. All I need to be up and running now is 1 piston, one set of rings and a HG. SO that should be doable before Jan. With that said, E85 won't be too far behind either. Right now the plan is ID1300s and 1 MagnaFuel ProTuner 625 pump. Then hello more boost and POWERS.

Why do you need a different fuel pump? Isnt the stock one sufficient enough for e85?

The stock one can't even touch the amount of volume I'm going to need to run E85 at the power levels I want.

Agreed, but I'd be careful of those pumps... I'm not intimately familiar with the Magnafuel pump in particular, but these pumps being "made by" names like Magnafuel and the like are probably coming from China.
They're very expensive, but I will not trust my build with anything other than a Weldon or a mechanical pump. If I were going for something a bit more tame, I'd probably go with Bosch 044s. If I didn't care all that much and had my EMS set up for a lean shutdown safety feature, I'd get a Chinese one from my buddy at fuel injector development.
By the way... why go with ID1300s? You're going to pay double, maybe triple what you can get a nearly identical injector for that will do exactly the same thing. If you want them because they have stainless internals, well... Newsflash! 99% of the Bosch EV14 injectors on the market have all stainless internals! The 1300s will not cope with alternative fuels any better than any of the other similar Bosch EV14s on the market (to my or anyone I know in the business' knowledge). I can get you Bosch EV14 1200s for $500 per set of 5 - Same injector as FIC 1100s. They are flow matched statically and dynamically, AKA, ID really doesn't have any ground to stand on to say their injector is functionally better than these.

This guy... saving you money...
Aren't you running an 044? Might be easier/cheaper to pick up another and a surge tank. What you doing for fuel lines?

Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - Good news day
I'm gonna go the even more fugal route for my "initial" e85 setup... My in-tank 450lhp with a -10an or -8an feed straight to the rail... I figure if the stock lines max out at 450whp on E85, then just swap that stock line... Plus I'm partial to simplicity of single pump setups... we'll see what that gets us...

Passionate about fuel delivery systems much man?
I'm just playing, anyways, I've been considering the Magnaflow pump because I want to avoid running a surge tank due to packaging constraints with a small chassis car. I'm sure I could come up with something that would work fine, but running one pump eliminates the or reduces diagnosis troubles when things do go wrong. If one pump takes a crap and the other is still running, I could still very well run into a fuel starvation issue during high load periods. With one pump, when it goes out, it's dead. Not to say that efficiency could/would decrease over time due to normal wear and tear. Honestly though, at the end of the day, if an 044 would support 550-650 on e85, then I would seriously take a good hard look at getting one. As for the injector stuff, I honestly didn't realize that the EV14 and FIC1100s ran stainless internals. That right there was the MAIN reason I was looking at getting them. Between the two (FIC and EV14s) I'd prefer the EV14s where I honestly have ZERO experience with FIC injectors.

Chris, I contacted Magnafuel directly and all of their products are produced in the USA (in Colorado), so I'm going to give that pump a shot.
