welded center diff query.

Post by speeding-g60 »

Sooooo.

Quattro fans..... Tech musings.

I have a locked center (Torsen) diff. Thus I can make it FWD or AWD or RWD by what axles I have in it.

Question is..... Say i want to run RWD. What power will ACTUALLY be put out if no front axles are in place? Recently on the Dyno, the car was spinning the rears bad. With a locked center power should be equal front to rear. Yet front saw >480 while the rears only saw ~360.

I am starting the Ford 8.8", four link, spool, live axle rear end now, and I am wondering what would happen if I try it RWD instead of AWD.....

Ponder and let me have some of your insights. You know who you are....

You should see all the power at the rear. Every RWD car with an AWD trans, that I have seen, will divert all power to the rear because theres nothing to turn in the front. The torque has to go somewhere and to the rear it shall go.

I do find that interesting that the front saw more power over the rear with a locked center. Are you running an 016?

01E, Wavetrack front, locked rear, welded (was welded haha) center.

tire slip was crazy..... it did much less the first of two pulls, from major spin. then we stood on the pass sill and it got way better. like 150 ft pounds and almost 100 horsies better.

this is last years number (738/539) and the first pull (762/460) and then this final pull. ALL CORRECTED numbers too!!! :) uncorrected was 87x awhp.

Aaron, i have nothing constructive to add, but wanted to say congrats on the progress with the race car. That's stupid numbers you're making! 8-)

it almost sounds to me that there just isnt enough weight on the rear if you are spinning. I mean you are making <900hp. I am curious as to why you are using an 8.8" rear end and not a 9". Is that due to weight concerns?

havent gotten them yet. but i will run 4.11 of course and i will be getting reverse R&P due to the rotation.....

i had half a thought to run an air or electric locker in the back, but that is about 4x the cost of a spool and then the added cost of air source and weight. i do have CO2 system i could operate it off of though.

Why not just flip the axle over and weld on the proper shock/spring perches? Are you going leafs or coils?

flip axle make soiling an issue. the axle is being built fully custom length tubes and all anyhow. disc brakes, clip eliminators bearing somethings, gusseted, etc. i need to buy the R&P anyhow, and its the same money for forward or reverse.

it is getting a four-link setup with REAL drag shocks and coils.
