Anyone have MC 1/2 Base Timing numbers?

Post by jretal »

Hey all,

So since I'm not going to be able to get the 'ol bird on the rollers for a bit to mess with anything, and will be tuning on my own (danger!), I wanted to make sure my timing numbers are rock solid before messing with the fuel, etc.

Chance anyone has the list of the MC1/2 base timing numbers they can share with me, so I get my map into the "safe zone" regarding timing?

I really want to toss the 2.2 bar WG spring in the car, but don't want to damage anything if my ignition timing numbers are off.

Thanks! Heading to VIR next weekend (Nov 8-10), so want to up the power a little bit so I'm not mowed down in the instructor group! :)

Here's an MC1 timing map (supposedly stock, as in from the stock MAC11 ECU) for premium fuel:

Holy ballsack that is a lot of timing. Obviously only up to 1.5 bar but still. I have like no timing in my car at all. Awesome.

I would imagine that MC2 timing maps are significantly more conservative. Beware, if that's what you have.

Great, thanks... shortblock is an MC1 w/ an NF head and SS exhaust valves...

Now I have to figure out how to input/mimic those timing numbers into my 034 Ic ECU... haha. But thank you! Huge help.

Hey Justin.

I'm still curious as to why you car wasn't running at Carlisle. I could have sworn it was timing, or a basic setting problem. I hope you got it figured out.

Cheers,

Craig.

Hey Craig,

Car wasn't running for a couple of reasons.

The biggest one was actually that the injectors were gummed up. That's the main reason we couldn't get the car to start at Carlisle. After cleaning them, car started and idled w/o issue.

The second one was on me. My ignition was 180* out, so in order to rectify this, I had the coil basically firing non-stop, so when it hit about 3k rpm, the coil would hit 100% duty cycle and then stop, causing the backfiring we got to enjoy when Hank was "massaging" the throttle for those few minutes.

With the injectors cleaned, and the coil only firing when it's suppose to, the car is running decently. I ran into issues w/ a poorly designed 034 60-2 crank pulley, so I'm currently having cut out issues b/c I have to regap the VR sender... but otherwise, car runs decently for the tune that I've put on it.

Moral though, it was fuel that was causing the biggest issue, not timing!

Awesome thanks for sharing.

I'm sure by Carlisle next year you'll have it running perfectly. A good looking car indeed!!

Cheers,

Interesting. Im running my 20v with mc2 pistons and mac11 management lol. Runs great, although I get knocking cel while cruising sometimes. Im guessing I just need brand new lifters

Craig, a clarification: in order to tell if my timing WAS 180* out, I had my coil firing non-stop, and forgot to uncheck the phase that wasn't igniting anything in the cylinders. This was causing my coil to max out and backfire at around 3k rpms.

Taco: I will need new lifters soon too, unfortunately. Mine have started tapping at startup b/c the car has sat for so long. They only have 30k miels on them, but I know from our old 200tq, that if they sit for too long, the lifters die and cause ticking. Will deal with that down the road, for now... 2.2WG spring and see how good I am at tuning :)
