Sounds like I should have hopped in when Joe did. Real sorry to hear, Ben. Glad it's nothing terribly serious though!

Sorry to see this Ben. Luckily I know a guy that something like 3 3b's just laying around. Maybe you can put one to good use while you fix/build your engine

Sorry to hear this Ben. Good luck with the rebuild!
Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
Thanks guys.
Thank you for the nice write up Chris. I appreciate it man. SO, as for the DET, timing was involved for sure but mostly it boils down to overboosting the crap out of it without a good clean tune for the pressures I was hitting. Ultimately, I believe this could have been avoided if I would have hooked up the MVR correctly the first time because I had ZERO boost control on the trip down.
Also, just a quick update:
For right now the car is going to go on the backburner while I recoup my finances from this trip and all the money I have thrown at it this summer. But I do have a plan:
-Wiseco Pistons (82.5mm)
-SS Exhaust and Intake valves
-Mild port/polish
-Crankshaft balancing
-TI retainers
-Light weight lifters
-ARP main studs (for bottom end)
- and any machine work needed (of course).
I would like to be able to comfortably rev to 8000-8300 RPMS.

loxxrider wrote:
I wonder what the cause was... was it simply from a lean condition over a long period of time making the mixture very hot or was it from too much timing advance? Either one could induce det. With Hank and Marc riding with you, I'm sure someone noticed one of the two...

Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
Well, if only the number 1 piston is damaged why not just find a good stock piston to throw in there and then you are back in business while you build your spare block, and then when the time comes rip the head off to build it and stick it on the built block and stuff that in the car?

Well, with the amount of visible damage I can see, I'm afraid the cylinder bore is going to be all jacked up and on top of that I am pretty sure that there is going to be some head damage that will need to be welded up. While I have it all apart, at a BARE minimum it will need SS valves, head work, #1 piston (provided the others are all jacked too) and a hone or bore. So I guess where I'm at, is I just need to build it to a level where it will handle getting beat on at the power levels I want.

Oh and pissed off taco, most likely it will turn out to just be a gasket match situation because I don't have access to a flow bench.

Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
It should be good as is to beat on for pretty much whatever power levels you want. The ss exhaust valves are a good idea but stock pistons and bore are fine. But I understand you may need to bore if you want to use the same block.
When I had my massive det I just scraped off the head, put stock pistons in a"new"block with a hone, and slapped it back together (New hg). There was no real damage to the head. At what point do you need main studs?

Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
If it turns out that all the damage is in the #1 hole (insert crude joke here) then I suggest finding out why it was so massive yet only on one cylinder. Check for a bad injector or wiring, etc.
Hope it's not too bad when you open it up.

loxxrider wrote:I agree, you don't want to run 91 octane with that setup. With 93 though, one could argue that you'd have plenty of available power. Consider a flex fuel setup so you don't always have to have E85 and don't have to care about testing it
For those of us stuck with 91 only, what about mixing in toluene? Would that be consistent enough, say going by an online calculator, to tune for 93 octane levels?

I can't comment on that, sorry! I think the answer is going to be along the lines of the idea that you wont really know the true ocatane rating of the mix unless there is some ratio you can use... You could always try it and listen for det though (assuming that stuff is safe to use). Like I said, I have no idea...

I dont have a flow bench either. Never stopped me. just gotta know how far to go, what to cut, not to cut. However, its not for everybody, and it does take a bit of finesse. no biggie if you're not willing to risk your head. I practiced on a 20v head in fact...but that head was destroyed....by a taco. You're going to need some tools $$$$$.

I agree with the flex fuel setup. I already have one and plan to use it. why bother with anything else? besides, anybody really want to mix your own chemicals and get cancer for your troubles? F that shit.
Re: Ben's Oceanic PTE5857 AAN 4kq - #1 Damage :(
According to Nazifornia, being alive is the number one reason of death. Also, traveling to LA involves breathing in chemicals known to the state of brokeazzfornia that may cause cancer or stupidity.
Also, mixing chemicals is fun!!

Bummer to hear this Ben. It's happened to all of us, in fact, I am convinced everyone should blow up a 20vt learning to tune before they jump into a nice 20v setup
