Alternative 20vt setups
Alternative 20vt setups
I dont like to use the term ghetto because it makes me think of something that would kill you if you were white. Basically I would like to start a GOOD discussion about non traditional 20vt setups. I know people have done them, so there should be a good knowledge base to build on here.
The setup I am personally looking at running is a 7a head, MC2 block, 7a crank with AAN pistons and attermarket rods with a holset and VEMS.
Basically from what I gather I should basically have a "ghetto" 3B at that point, which should roughly place me around 9.3-6:1 CR. Would it benefit me further to drop the extra $$$ on a compression dropping headgasket instead of a traditional one? I know it will make it less likely to have detonation, and give the ability for more boost as well, but where are the difference in numbers really at? Are we talking ability to run more fuel/advanced timing, 10 or 20lbs more boost?

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Will you have the head machined for a water manifold?

Nothing Ghetto about that. Forged rods and pistons are a win. You will be able to run easily 20 psi, probably 25-28 without an issue. I think hank had is at over 500 Hp in a similar config. E85 will get you the furthest.

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
For the CR dropping headgasket, it may not be necessary. I think a good water/meth system will get you pretty far on pump. What are your goals? Fuel?
Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Gas stations around my area have a plentiful supply of e85 as well as 93 so I am up in the air on fuel. If I go 93 I will do a water meth setup and if I do e85 I will probably do a water meth setup anyways just to tune for the extra power.
I know dana's setup put down 310whp and ran an 11.8 so I am shooting for similar 1/4 mile time and more power, probably between 350-400whp.

I wont be doing a water manifold purely because I will not run anything but a holset and for my power goals I can do it without a water cooled turbo.

7a+17psi(H1C)+e85= WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I still need to get on the dyno and see what's what.

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
I'm running a 3B head on an MC2 block with a 3B crank, AAN pistons, and Scat rods. It all works, nothing ghetto about it.

What size injectors are you running? Seems like you always have the cool cars lol.

How'd you figure the compression ratio?

87 5ktq - 20vt
91 v8 5spd - Why?

Damn phone lol. . . Anyways, a stock 3B/Aan runs around that same compression, and obviously it varies between each seperate engine due to manufacture specs. All 2.2 5cyl blocks were essentially the same, the onky difference were the crankshafts and the rods and pistons and heads between 20v and 20v models.

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
I just realized how stupid that questions was. Stock AAN's are at 9.3:1...

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Lol shit happens. Looks like ill be picking the car up either next weekend or the weekend after, apparently there is a huge carshow in Austin next weekend so my friend may not be able to drive me up to Dallas next weekend.
Aan pistons and rods sitting in the garage right now, picking up the mc2 block from my neighbor soon as well then I will start piecing together the rest.

I wish my wife felt the same way
!They are Bosch "green tops" 42# IIRC.
Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Wow only 42lbers on an e85 setup? Im intrigued. . . I was under the impression you needed to run bigger injectors to get the most out of e85.

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Well, I am running 4 bar base pressure so they are effectively >42#. They couldn't support a lot more but they are good. They were also on hand; if I was buying new I would have gone with EV14s 800-1000cc to be more future proof.
The baseline is 30% more fuel for E85 but I've ended up under that.

Re: Alternative 20vt setups
Im seriously considering 55lb injectors and 93 octane to start with until Im good at tuning with vems. Ill most likely switch over to vems once I want big power.

And really the only major difference between the 20v and 20v rods and cranks are the journals are smaller on the 20v vs the 20v, which is why I will be running a 7a crank. By my estimates I will have a 2.2 turbo engine for the cost of rods, seals and manifold/turbo. Not including vems or injectors and the random things that will pop up.
