Upper Strut Mounts

Post by Toph »

I had the misfortune of purchasing and installing 034 upper strut mounts in my project coupe. I can watch the center of the mount move across the hole in the strut tower by what seems like WAY too much. I understand that there will be movement, and that the movement isn't along one axis, but I don't see why the center would travel like it does except that the mount is undersized and doesn't fit firmly into place. This is more than just rubber deflection. Now, this post isn't just a rant, I swear... One of my rear upper mounts is junk (old) as well, so I plan to replace all 4 at some point soon.

What would you recommend I install when I replace these? I don't want to do this job too often, and am willing to pay more for a quality piece.

Here is a brand list:
CRP (Conti) <15$/ea
Meyle HD <15$/ea
Audi Genuine ~50$/ea
URO <8$/ea - no thanks
034 - only if they've fixed the issue and are going to replace my junk ones. Honestly though, I don't feel like pulling my mounts to send to them for warranty inspection, and having them drag their feet while my car is on jack stands. If they will stand behind their products, I'll be replacing my mounts with different ones, then sending my 034 units in for replacement and use on a different car.

Thanks for your input - I plan to place an order relatively soon.

Thanks, a quick search shows them at about 15 dollars less than Audi.

I found this: http://www.findpart.org/part/sac-802159

It shows 8A0412323D and 857412323B on the same list. I searched the latter, but I am finding that it is for the rear of a b2. I'm not sure what the difference may be. Early 90s had the 857412323B in the back, CQ and later 90(I think) had 8A0412323D all around. Anyone have any info on the difference? One comes with the bearing installed, the other doesn't?
