Quieting the angry pigeon with a different BOV spring?

I've been experimenting with the black and white springs for my Tial Q to find the best compromise for this: I started with running the recommended spring (white -8psi). The turbo is really responsive and the car runs great with this one, but under mid throttle to WOT pulls when I push in the clutch the turbo chirps like an angry pigeon. In a way, it sounds kinda badass, but I'm picturing the thing stalling like crazy and shaking like a mfkr. Maybe this is ok? When I put in the black spring (-6psi) it's better, but the car is a little less responsive(I think I'm getting a bit of creep in the valve when boost starts to come on) and the pigeon is calmed down a bit but still like to make it's presence known.

I'm relocating the BOV to a space just past the turbo to see if this helps also...

OT, but did the leaking cease on your 3073?

How is it plumbed? It shouldn't be making those kinds of noises regardless of the spring

I had the same problem with mine as well. Ended up rigging up a stock Audi BPV as a BOV and never had an issue w/ it opening once I was off the throttle.

It was mounted just before the throttle body, but I'm moving it to just after the turbo. For the vacuum, I've been using the port for the stock BPV. I've also been wondering if the diameter of that nipple is too small to properly actuate the BOV?

Hank, The oil consumption seems to have leveled off a bit. It seems to use more when it's pretty cold out. Dave said something about that being expected because of the size of the forged pistons being a bit small and needing to expand with the heat.

Does location play a big roll in a properly operating BOV?

I've seen them right before the TB (that's where I have mine as well) to anywhere inbetween... just curious if it makes a difference.

I've had Tial BOVs mounted in both locations (directly pre-tb and directly post-turbo)... that will not make a difference. It should not make any sound except "whoosh". I would disassemble the valve and make sure it's moving smoothly/etc. I also use the stock vacuum reference line with no issues Dace.

I've checked operation and it's schmoove like buttah. It's going to it's new location now so I can set up my water/meth injector where the BOV was. We'll see how that works...

Oh yeah to be clear, it does go whoosh, but is preceded by a few chirps until the valve opens up enough. It also chirps when I'm running ~15+psi and slowly reduce throttle instead of pulling back quickly.

I think I know the sound you're having now... not what I would call a chirp if it's the same noise, more of a whistle...at least in my case.

I've only had it happen at idle on my old 50mm tial bov...ended up shimming the spring with a washer and that fixed it.

I don't think that's it in my case since it happens when boosting only. Definitely a chirp. Kind of like tires chirping even. Kind of. Anyway Ed, how big is the vac ref line port in your Apikol IM? Tial says something about needing no less than 1/4"id or the valve opening could be delayed. I know your last UrS had the stock IM with a Tial, but I'm wondering if Apikol put a larger port in.

Nope, Apikol cuts off the stock vacuum block and re-uses it on their manifold. I'm also using the stock (3mm ID?) vacuum line that runs behind the timing belt
