EDIGREG wrote:Not good... I would first check to make sure the compressor housing is on there perfectly straight and properly tightened down. If it is a bit crooked, the wheel will not spin freely.

If there is no shaft play then that's really the only thing that could be wrong.

No thrust, but there is radial play, but not excessive. I'm going to take the housing of tonight and have a look.

I'm trying to weigh my options. If I don't put another Garrett turbo on (dad's comp or one of the k24s we have lying around) then I have to change oil and water lines and in the comp's case a manifold as well. so a quick fix to get to Carlisle wouldn't really be a quick fix. I'm really happy with the gtx30r and the .63 hotside housing on this car. If it wasn't broken :P

Man that suuuucks!!! It might be worth popping the hotside off and see if it's rubbing on the inside of the housing. Either way, that is unhealthy. :(

Lol to all the above.

Well I sent hank a big status report, waiting for him to get back to me on his thoughts. I *think* the compressor shows signs of contact but he will know better. I might be able to limp this to Carlisle and swap turbos out there, but if not hank is going to quickmail me a temporary fix and I'll have to get my butt in gear to swap it out AND go get new tires before I leave! I might not make it for the caravan but I'll be to Carlisle Friday night at the latest.

And if all else fails I'll have to take the TDI wagon.

You better be there!

I just watched your videos and that thing is definitely dragging somewhere. Reminds me of when the housings aren't tightened down all the way on many Holsets I've worked on.

yeah, there appears to be a housing clearance issue, not a CHRA issue. Like others have suggested, we are having Matt take off the snap ring to make sure it is 100% seated, then verifying tightening sequences to see if we can replicate the drag.

Regardless, this 4kq is Carlisle bound, even if we have to send out another turbo today!! :)

Looks like we're going with option 2, some form of 30-series Garrett will be in my hands tomorrow or Wednesday. Then it's tires ON Thursday and alignment. Shit is going to be tight. Or perhaps tyte. Or perhaps both. And I have to somehow change the main seal on my TDI trans for the buyer. I sense some early mornings coming...

Can't wait to see what it ends up being...
Perhaps a 30r version of Robs 60-1 billet... ;)

Glad to see the car will be buttoned up, Matt! Look forward to checking it out... now if only I can get mine back together!! Needs to get some of the crowd's tuning hands on it so it runs properly... lol.

Eeeeeee, turbo is here but not tires yet. If they don't come in tomorrow I will very likely be going the trip to Carlisle alone (with Maddex), what a huge bummer that is. Honestly the driving is the most fun for me. But I absolutely HAVE to have them for the trip, especially now that it's calling for rain.

Actually, if the tires don't come I'm going to bring the TDI. I've made up my mind. It's going to be WAY less stressful and I can still enjoy the drive with everyone. This way I can focus on life instead of trying to make everyone around me want to kill me.
