4 piston caliper orientation

Post by amd is the best »

As you all are likely aware, 4 piston calipers have two different sized pistons. The larger are supposed to be leading and smaller trailing from what I understand.

My question, how big of a deal is it that they are in a correct orientation? I can't get the crossover pipes out without destroying the fittings.

The brakes will work, but you will probably see uneven pad wear and possibly decreased clamping power due to the drag on the pad not being ideal. I would run them and maybe keep an eye out for a second set or a replacement crossover tube.

Or you can bleed them off the car and then re-install them "upside down", but with the correct piston orientation. This is probably the safe thing to do.

GOOD CALL JIM!!! Thanks! I'll just bleed them before mounting. Can't believe I hadn't thought of that.
