Marc wrote:Ok, so, I'll start by ASSuming you've got the timing right (regarding the ignition lock thing, entering "0" disables the feature, use "1" or something to lock it at that). the reason you see it disabling is probably from turning the key off and back on to repeat the cranking cycle with the stock ignition switch.

so if you're not starting and timing IS right, then you might have something wrong with either your ignition ORDER (meaning you've got #1 right, but perhaps in the process you've accidentally transposed the other cylinders). verify with the "test" method on the ignition outputs visual page.

if thats all good, lets have a look at fueling. are the plugs getting wet? best bet, send me a datalog with the engine cranking over. Also, send me a triggerlog so I can verify all is good there (tools->record trigger log, send me the file that ends with '.triggerlog' in your vems directory).

To make things less confusing regarding getting TDC after the trigger to line up in an acceptable rage (60-130) the best way to go is to change the first trigger tooth. that way your ignition order doesn't have to move to accomplish the same goal.

hope that helps.

Yeah I was using 1 as a value, I didn't realize it needed to be reset every time. Will do next time.

Also will do with the test and trigger log. So I can just hit test and I should see spark in that plug? That's cool.

I believe the plugs are getting wet but I didn't pull them. Kinda dumb I guess but it seemed like it was getting fuel because when we unplugged them I got a backfire once, which we presumed was from residual fuel.

SO when you say change the first trigger tooth you mean adjust the slider (or the # on the left under "first trigger tooth" lol). So I can adjust that, leave the ignition order, and keep my TDC after the trigger happy between 60-127.

Cool... I think. I'll start with a fresh head tomorrow and get some logs first and do some verifying.

Marc (or others) what is the stock ignition output order? I'm getting confused by some of the VEMS info, they really need to consolidate/organize some things. Which is why we have the VEMS section of theprojectpad :)

Stock 12453, with PNP UrS vems, with firmware 1195 and the latest vemstune is:

setpper c
stepper b
stepper a
ign 4
stepper d

Correct? If so I think that my order is messed up from what I remember (because I was searching and messing with stuff and ended up screwing it up like ya said Marc).

yes. BUT, you are not using stepper outputs. if you try to, you'll instantly explode the stepper chip (you are running IGBT coils, not TTL drive like the PnP ecus). I'll confirm what your outputs are supposed to be when I get into the office tomorrow.

Hmmm okay. Does the stepper chip run anything else? I hope I didn't explode it already.

I think I sent you an email already with instructions on how to wire the coils. as long as you followed that guide you're good. if you wired them to the stepper in an effort to match the stock audi pnp then its smoked for sure.

AWWWWWW YEAH

First of all, huge thanks to Marc for helping trouble shoot this pig. First my ignition order was all messed up, then the timing was out, and then it was 180* out.

And then we realized that the fuel pump was turning off when starting the car, must be on the load reduction relay (makes for some pretty hard starts... lol).

BUT IT STARTED!

And I got some exhaust note. Dear god, how I've missed this car. Everything sounds great too. No weird noises, smooth, turbo sounds wicked although not as loud as before.

So here's my to do list:

    - put fuel pump on different power circuit
    - wire ignition switch to relay which powers all the VEMS on key on
    - run tach wire to tach
    - button up interior
    - button up engine bay
    - put new rubber thingies on exhaust so it hangs higher
    - break in!

It wouldn't be such a big deal if it didn't take ALL day on Saturday without it starting. It's a small accomplishment but because of the time it feels bigger. I *really* wanna drive it.

Errrmageeeeeeeerd it's so close. Tonight I wired the tach (had to start it up to verify :P), buttoned up the engine bay, and put the dash back together. Really pleased. Getting up earrrrrly to give the fuel pump power while starting, get the essential ECU power circuits relayed power, and then take her for her maiden voyage!

Pretty freaking stooooked

Weeehoo. Break-in done. Time to beat it up! lol. After the next time I drive it I'll change the oil and then start some tuning.

Break in was semi-interrupted by some trigger errors hitting right at about 5krpm. Also a hose blowoff, which seems to always happen, and the alternator belt coming off. Here are two log files. Already sent to Marc but I figured I'd post them here. It's running fairly rich but it's on the basetune, zero tweaking other than base setup. It's not rich enough for a rich misfire is it?

Car feels great on 9psi :) And this turbo whistles just like the 30r, don't know what people mean when they say it ain't loud as a big truck.

Revised to-do list:
- replace alternator belt with one longer (came off while breaking in)
- permanently wire power (temp setup for break-in, one wire to be spliced in and done)
- drive more YO

I guess it could have also been a boost leak. Does VEMS react the same way to boost leaks as motronic? Ie bucking etc? Add pressure test to my list. Also curious because boost seemed to be stuck at 170kpa, and I'm pretty sure all boost controls are enabled.

mentioned it via email, but your rpm is super jumpy in the log, which usually means crank sensor wiring problems of some variety. try swapping VR+ and VR- on the crank sensor connector.
