Ads urq project

Post by ads »

I had a thread on mg but I haven't updated it in forever so I thought I would continue it over here.

Car is an 83 quattro faded mars red (original paint still, one day I'll get it painted)

Image

Decided to swap a 20vt in it when the 20vt ate a head gasket. I was going to leave it stock for awhile while I built another aan.

Image

This didn't last long however, some cheap parts and some crazy thinking got to me so the engine came out and got a refurb.

Image

Image

Image

Currently the 01e needs some axles and a linkage and it can get the final bolt in.

Image

Image

I also need to notch the motor mounts and slide the trans back almost an inch to meet the driveshaft. 4:11 diff is in

Image

Currently waiting on header/downpipe from Hank as well as some other bits. Started mocking up the fuel pumps but waiting on an order for fittings until I can go much further with it right now.

Scat rods
ARP mains/head studs
Internally balanced
034 billet clutch kit
7a cams for now
Ported/polished head, port matched intake
Oversized intake/exhaust valves, LW lifters, HD springs, ti retainers
Forced performance GT3586 turbo
Soon to have a Hank manifold/downpipe combo
Air to water intercooler
Aquamist HFS-4 water meth

Stack instrumentation
Probably a few things I'm forgetting.

Looking good Adam! I'm sourcing axles for my swap so if I find any for the 01E at a good price I'll let you know, or if you do first let me know... we can split shipping. :) Maybe I'll come over to your place and grab the 01A axles and have a look at your big boy fuelling kit on my week off.

Hank is making me some axles for the swap so no worries there. And yeah for sure, let me know when you're back in town.

Question time: Has anyone relocated the alternator to the passenger side of the engine? Keep in mind I'm still running serp belt. Also, will the 110 amp alternator have any problems running a water pump, meth pump, 3 fuel pumps and a fan continuously, as well as all the other electrical? Mind you I don't have any power sapping creature comforts other than pwr windows/mirrors. Still seems a bit much to me for the stock alternator though

those are all fairly low amperage components. Why are you running 3 fuel pumps?

Thanks for the axles, I'll get back to you about fitment.

Think I ought to get busy on my project to play some catch up between these garage queens of ours, what with Sterling about ready to go and Tyson likely to slap something together :hide:

Reason for 3 fuel pumps is the 2 in the surge tank and one feed. I went this route because the ultimate goals of this car could not be met with a single 044 in a surge tank. I didn't want to have go back and re route fuel lines when its time for upgrade.

Let me know with those axles Dustin. I completely agree, more progress needs to be made for the both of us, i am getting jealous seeing other audis on the road already.

Long time no update. Been pretty busy with the car lately though. Lots of wiring done with a little left to go.

Finally got the alternator mounted up

Image

Image

Also buttoned up the fuel lines

Image

Catch can setup is figured out, only have to make a bracket to properly mount the can

Header/downpipe and turbo hot side should be at swain tech getting coated now, hoping to have everything back before Christmas. Eagerly waiting for that stuff so I can make the rest of the oil/water lines and have everything mounted.

Image

Coils finally mounted

Image

And I finally started mocking up the inter cooler, now to make some brackets and finalize its position

Another thing to note; after installing the head gasket and timing the engine I tightened the crank and cam bolts. I turned the engine over by hand but there was plenty of resistance just before tdc. I couldn't wrap my head around it at first. No valves were hitting and there was nothing in the cylinders or valve ports. It did however sound like it was coming from outside of the block. Turns out the tdc pin on the flywheel was mashing into the sensor. This is strange because the pin was setup by my machinist and set to eurospec/034 specs. The sensor took a bit of a beating and it will need replacing. I will have to make a spacer for it when I get a new sensor. Anyone ever had this happen?

Man, you have some luck... although it coulda been worse. Still, just seem as though every possible thing that could have gone wrong with that 034 fw has failed gloriously. :boom:

Yeah no kidding, mind you I have never had very good luck with those guys, every order theres always something.

Little bit more progress today. Got the intercooler into place and some piping started.

Image

Image

Also finished up all the lines for the oil cooler. Now to get back to wiring. I finally finished up the centre console and put it in its place. Notice the 4kq window switch because I couldn't find one from a coupe.

Image

I also need to redo my diff output seal again. I just put a new one in, back to where the old one was but I guess it was too far because as soon as I put oil in it it poured right back out.
Has anyone done a solenoid or anything to control the diff lock? I got rid of all of the vacuum stuff and would like to go electronic.

No ideas on the vac/diff stuff (elec sounds vaguely Mitsu isn? wtf?) but can offer a spare window switch if it helps...

Little bit of an update, some progress was made.

Had the car wired up but I didn't really like it so I tore everything out and re wired it again. I think its a lot cleaner and easier to use this way.

Image

Image

And if you don't want to look at it you don't have to

Image

Also found a spot I liked for the ecu and meth controller

Image

Heat exchanger for the intercooler is done as well

Image

Image

Exhaust parts finally came back from being coated. Its starting to look like an engine bay again.

Image

Image

Image

Started to mock up the boost piping

Image

Image

Here is the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler, waiting to be powder coated

Image

All I'm waiting on now is a few sensors and misc. things in the engine bay and she will be ready to start. After that I just need seat brackets and axles and she should be ready for the road. Im sure I will run into a boatload of problems once it gets fired up and that will delay its road worthiness a bit but I'm not too worried.

One small thing that concerns me is my transmission. I had to pull out the shifter linkage assembly because it was stripped where the shaft from the transmission and the shaft from the shifter connect. I fixed the problem and got the linkage back in but now I can't get reverse no matter what I do. I even took the linkage back out and tried to put it in reverse manually by hand but no luck. Spun the engine by hand and tried to get it to pop in but nothing. Since reverse gear isn't synchro'd I am wondering what the problem could be, any tips would be appreciated.

Nice progress! What did you use to mount vems to the top of the glove box? I'm thinking that's where mine has gotta go because there's nowhere to put it cleanly up/behind.

I just cut a slot for the ecu plug and made it nice and snug, it holds itself up. then t
when you plug in the harness it holds it firmly against the back of the glove box.
