Urq axles

I ordered a set of axles for my urq last year in preparation for my 01e swap. When I received the axles they were 100mm flanged coupe gt axles. I am returning these and ordering a new set( from germanautoparts) and I told them of their mistake. They say that is all they have for an urq though. Can anyone give me the actual urq passenger side axle part number? Or does anyone know an axle that can be used for this application. I remember hearing that the rear left of a 4kq is the same but I can't find out for sure or not. Any confirmation would be appreciated.

Hank would probably know what you need. Only 84 and some very early production 85 4kqs had the larger output flanges on the rear diff like what the urq has. on my 4k with an 01e i swapped the output flanges from the 016 to the 01e. If you do that make sure to use the corrosponding bolts since the seats on the bolts are different between the 016 and 01e flanges.

Are 85 4kq rear axles the same as 84 and earlier? Any part numbers for cross referencing would help. i just need to find some for sale and i don't want to go to 100mm flanges.

85 rear axles are different than the 84s for the 4000. The 85 uses the 100mm joint vs. the 108mm on the 84s

Like I already said in my post up top...some early 85's have the bigger flanges. Ben's oceanic is one of them. and i've seen 2 others in person. You just have to look underneath and its easy to tell if it has the large flanges becuase the differential mount arms are cast as part of the diff housing identicle to urq diff housings. Small flange diffs have the mount arms bolted on with allens.

Again, I'm looking for part numbers, or a source where to get these axles. Im pretty sure cardone has remans but I need a part number to cross reference them. Can someone confirm that the front right and rear left are the same axle?

No i haven't heard of vagcat, that's what im looking for. I tried genuine audiparts but they didny have an axle part number.

Yes Adam, the info here is correct. You need 84 4000 axles.

Yupper, Dan is correct here, early build 85's got the big stuff too.

The fact is that every book that shows axles for an UrQuattro is wrong. I'll bet 50 guys have tried and every single one has ended up with 4000 axles. To this day I don't think you'll ever find a set across a parts counter.

For the 01e you need one to be lengthened (with spacer block) and one to be shortened (driveline specialty shop). That's the easy way to go, otherwise you'll end up chasing used parts forever.

I may have to check out dss or similar shops for some beefier axles. The only reason i wanted empi axles is because they use chromoly cages and they are cheap replacements.

Adam, i have shortened 5000 axles in the rear in my URQ after busting the original URQ shafts(by way of twist). I modify them by cutting them on the factory friction weld. I then press shorten the shaft, press in a chromoly plug, pin the plug, do a 3 pass weld to get it up to the shaft OD, then slide a moly sleeve over the top of the weld that has been turned down. It ends up being REALLY strong. I can usually do it in about 1.5-2 hours which ends up being around 125$ per shaft. Sound expensive until you spec out DSS shafts. I mark my axles to see if they are twisting, and the ones I sleeved to shorten are MUCH stronger than the OEMs. 650wtq clutch drops on 255 R comps without issues. Same couldn't be said for oem axles.

Here is a picture of some I shortened for a guy wanting to run 108mm cups in a 4kq that couldn't find URQ axles.

Other plus is that you wouldn't need the spacer, as I could make the axle to the correct length. This saves 75$, making the added cost of the axle a little more tolerable.

Might need that procedure done on my 200's driver axle too.
