Ben's new project - Saving another Cabriolet

Post by Grillage »

I picked this up today from Somerset Ky....

Got it cheap as it needs some tlc before it will be usable.
The issue the seller cited was a broken serpentine belt that almost broke the timing belt. I suspect it may have jumped 1 tooth, but looks as if it could be timed properly. The owner knew enough not to run it with the TB in this condition...
Image

There are some other problems as well. The back window had leaked at some point and created a science project in the rear seats. They "fixed it" this way...
Image
This is an easy fix. I get a new top for my manual cabriolet and put that top on this car.
I need to likely remove the entire interior and clean like crazy. Ill probably replace the seats completely if I can find some that work. The back seats look like this but were covered up in the photos they sent. They clearly need replacing...
Image

I have found two full sets of seats on Car-Part.com - one is black leather about 10 minutes from me and another is tan up near Canton Ohio - a full day back and forth.
I wonder how black seats would look with tan carpet.

Also, the car has been resprayed very poorly. It used to be green (like my other 94 cab) but has been painted black. Someone put some kind of can on the hood and it ate through the black and left a stream of original green somehow. Ill need to deal with that too. They also debadged the rear and added some kind of spoiler (not to mention the window screen around the headlights)
Image

This is weird too. The instrument cluster is different than my other 94 Cab...

"old"

Lastly the radiator nipple broke off where the overflow bottle should connect to it. Can that be JB Welded?

Seems you're a sucker for punishment... you'll fit right in 'round these here parts! haha

Planning on another manual swap, maybe with a 20v and billet k26 or something?

I don't think ill do a manual swap on this one. I bought it to either fix and sell or to fix and let my lovely wife drive it.

I need to get to the black leather interior and check it out but I am opening a restaurant this week. It means very long days for a week or two. Maybe one day later this week

Update!

I got to the black interior at a junk yard in northern KY.
It is from this VERY nice example with 82k miles on the clock that recently had a head on.

Here's the interior...

All looks really nice!
I bought the seats and carpet as well as all the black trim for $200
Got the top as well. It looks brand new.

Both interior and top will go on my 5speed cab and ill put the okay ecru interior and dry but cloudy windowed top in the "new" cab

I started pulling the seats and carpet out of the black Cab to get at the musty moldy smell. I can't stand to spend any time at all inside...
Image
Then remove the carpet. It was dry but the padding under it was soaked...

So my next step is to sit inside the car and have the wife hose it down. Find the leaks and seal.

Re: Ben's new project - SCRAPPED - now parting

So I got the engine running in this car and found that the transmission is bad.

Unfortunately for me, I sank some $ into it before that happened. I put a new Conti TB Kit into it and a new battery. Also headlights but I'm keeping those.

I'd love to sell the engine whole but there isn't really a huge market for the ol' 12v V6.

I would expect to sell either the heads as a whole or just the AAH cams
Also the TB Kit - you'd need the gaskets again though.

I plan to keep the Cab only bits - the hydraulic pump, lines and valves though I don't know if this car's system was working.

Everything else is up for grabs.

let me know if you need anything! - I'll be posting in the proper section too.
