Wheel speed and VEMS

Post by amd is the best »

Has anyone experimented with adding a wheel speed sensor to VEMS on our cars? Gear dependent boost would be neat to play with as well as having speed logged.

Doesn't look difficult to add.

Just curious if it's worth my time.

I was wondering the same. As well as GPS.
If the feature is there, why not? Might as well.

Probably be easier to build a circuit that T's off the speedo and decodes (if needed) rather than setting up a seperate wheel speed sensor. It would just be an XY table (speedo vs rpm).

The plan was to use the factory speedometer sensor and wire it into VEMS. Looks as though a few simple modifications to the VEMS board and you can input most factory speed signals.

I would like more info on this as well. I am running a stack st700sr display and it comes with wheel speed sensors, it would be nice to integrate with the vems and have boost by gear.

I am using the speed sensor on just a regular hall sensor that picks up 6 pulses off the axle bolts on the inner CV. I did this on our forumla FSAE car as well. It rocks with my AiM dash as it plumbs into the dash via the CAN BUS, and thus logs it on the AiM display/memory. I always meant to do boost by gear, but never got around to it. It is high on the list. It is the key to getting wicked fast Quarter times. Aaron picked up a bunch of time when he started having just enough power to the groudn to not break 1-3 loose.

Unfortunately no CAN BUS for me so its running all the wire again. My stack wss calls for 4 small tabs as pickups. I was thinking of welding onto the output flange on the drivers side of the 01e ( right by the factory speed sensor). If i knew it could read the bolts on the axle accurately that would be even easier though.

yup. it was one of the few MAJOR DECIDING FACTORS for me. and i do use it. limiting boost in first saves....

mine was done off the OEM VSS. a simple wiring thing that changed it to a digital signal for an input on my ECU. then dial it in IIRC
