elQUANTUMino - Painted, almost assembled, plumbed & wired

Post by elQUANTUMino »

elQUANTUMino project:

I got a free QSW 5 years ago, stored for a year, then I cut it up and re-assembled it as an elCamino inspired "ute".

Drove it as a beater for 3 months, drove it in the garage and ignored it for 4 years...

Last spring I hatched a plan to swap in 20VT from my 1986 4000q, torsen 016 trans from 200 20v, torsen rear diff, new intercooler, exhaust by Jonathan, 3071bb turbo, re-sliced and re-diced "Swanson" intake by Jonathan full street/track roll cage, camber caster plates up front... custom steel flares, all new wiring, custom breather & valve cover.

I've done almost everything myself except exhaust & aluminum welding by Jonathan and some help swapping the motor and trans in.

The long story in pictures:

here's the car when I bought it, part of the 3/$500 legendary QSW bonanza... found online, stranger who lived 1.5 miles from me!
It had grille, lights and front struts/brakes from older 2wd Quantum Wagon on it... lots of bondo and primer over a little rust
Image
3rd car (silver) was very rusty, this test hack was done the night before it went off to the scrap yard after I picked it clean
Image
Here it is in primer/beater mode when I drove it for a few months... next to the "good" car, that was most excellent DD for 4+ years :)
Image
Tore into it big time this year! the rest of the photos are past few months...

Just need to weld in strut tower tops, modify struts, paint, plumb, wire, tune, drive to Carlisle for May Audi shindig!
Then I want to get it tuned and tweaked for Polish Mountain Hill Climb in August :flag:

Perfect....almost done then!! ;) It's good to see this project here at The Project Pad. I liked it when you were running the 4kq 20vt before sending it back to it daddy, but always thought the elQUANTUMino a fun unique project. It just got better with the freshly built, waaaaay low mile 20vt stuffed into it. Cant wait to see it finished up (if there is ever such a thing) and rocking with about 30psi of boost. Ought to be fun!!

Lots of progress, not done yet...

I found out that the old driveshaft is SHOT... got new support and u-joint bearing... may as well plan on finishing up 108mm T4-EuroVam inner CV's onto QSW half shafts in back, 108mm cups on Audi-V8 torsen diff, all new bushing and mounts for rear end since the main driveshaft needs to come out again... I figured out how to grind down the inside end of the shaft to fit EV/T4 inner CV, but buggered one of the CV's in the process of installing & removing it a dozen times until it fit... need one more EV/T4 inner CV before I can finish it all up... pics to come on that...

I hate wiring. I have a 22 pin connector to use on the dash to harness connection.

All of the wiring is done outside of the cab/dash... elQ was removed from the lift so I (6'4" 220#) can have better access to wiring... which is all concentrated in passenger foot well now...

Rear Bumper Mounted, George Jetson Exhaust tip made from V-Bands

Paint turned out OK, I have not wet sanded it yet and may smooth and re-spray some spots here and there... "Race Car Paint" ;)

Sidetracked this fall by EuroVan gushing gear oil... removed engine & trans, new clutch, new exhaust, new PS lines, trans seals, axles, lowered, tucked front bumper, painted hatch, rust repairs...scored some fat5's for it...

I'll get back into wiring real soon... I have most of the 22 pin connector wired to gauge panel... need a new driveshaft and need to R&R rear end with torsen, new bushings and mounts all around... driving it in springtime!
