Nick's 2001 Audi S4 - SFOURCED

Post by amd is the best »

Well, I figure why they hell not make a thread for my S4 too and since it's already been a project I'll go back in time, share some pics and also share where it's going.

So, it was August of 2007 when I picked the car up. It's an early 01 in light silver metallic, 57k, 6 speed with an APR chip and bypass valves and was in immaculate shape. It's the white and black interior which I was skeptical about at first but I absolutely love the contrast! I intended on keeping it stock....lol, that didn't last long.

Image

Image

Image

So I started with smaller stuff. Added an APR carback, a lip spoiler, HID fog lights, RS4 grill, 20% tint and a set of coilovers before winter:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Some DONKS:

Image

By this point I thought I started hearing the "dentist drill" (bad turbo) noise and came across a guy who purchased an entire APR Stage 3 kit and decided to bail on the project. So I got a great deal on an unopened APR Stage 3, woooot!

So by spring of 2008 I had my car up and running with a full APR Stage 3, MTM downpipes, SSAC catback exhaust, K&N, full 034 engine/trans/snub mounts and a Southbend OFE (stage 3) clutch. Turns out the RS4 fuel pump in the kit was bad/damaged so I dropped an 044 in the tank as well.

Another set of wheels:

Image

Winter of 2008. Rebuild of transmission #1 (lol). New 1-2 collar, new 3-4 collar, new 1st though 4th gears, all new synchros, used mint input shaft and all new seals. Also added an Apikol diff mount and Stern diff plate bushings:

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

New parts (plus the full JHM rebuild and 3-4 shift collar which are not pictured):

Image

Also added a new clutch because the stage 3 slipped from time to time on a hard launch:

Southbend Stage 5 and fidanza:

Image

Image

New transmission was perfect and I brought the car down to spring show n' go in Englishtown, NJ. Was featured in Euro Tuner Mag (11.93 @ 116 on pump gas!):

Image

Image

Another new set of wheels (current) BBS CH 17" x 8.5" ET35:

Image

Image

Image

Full big brake kit:

Image

Winter of 2009: For whatever reason I mashed up another 3-4 shift collar in my rebuilt 01E which really sucked. I didn't have time to rebuild another transmission so I picked up another "mint" unit and threw it in the car with a few other regularly needed maintenance items (after-run pump and spider hose):

Image

Image

Image

New after-run pump:

Image

So the car was up and running again for 2010. New transmission was poop from the get go (not nearly as bad as I've seen them) and would grind into third even at low speed/rpm. I put in some regular gear oil (rather then synthetic) and being that it was less slippery the bad syncro could grab the collar and that fixed it temporarily.

10-17-2010 The S4 hits 100,000 miles! By this time the trans is really acting up (3-4 collar is sticky and 1-2 is not far behind).

I take it out for a scenic car ride with a few friends, proceed to show them how it launches and scare the hell out of them, lol. Running 1st to 2nd and my shift knob flys apart yet I continue to shift to 3rd. Now reaching the top of third gear I proceed to shift 4th only to find myself in 2nd gear with the clutch out. I see the tacho PEG and see a CEL. OH FUCK! Now I'm coasting at 90ish mph so I proceed to try and pop start the car...clutch slips, lol. Ok, she's locked up! Hour tow home and parked...

At this point I put it up for sale AS-IS for any reasonable offer assuming the worst (needs engine and trans), and go a buy my 2010 Jetta TDI (10/20/10). A few weeks later I receive a message from a forum member saying "DON'T SELL IT". I open the message and proceed to read on. He said that he did exactly the same thing (money shifted 3rd to 2nd) and he thought that his engine was toast as well. Turns out that the steel trigger ring on his Fidanza flywheel ripped the rivets out and got lodged in the bellhousing. Untouched to this point I enthusiastically run down to the shop and pull the plugs to verify there was no catastrophic top end damage and they were all perfect. This gives me hope!

So as most of you know the 200 project consumed my resources (time/$$$) this past winter and the S4 has been sitting on the back burner. Now I am getting the itch to pull it apart and am hoping it's just the flywheel on top of needing another transmission. Finger crossed!

So that's where it sits as of right now...

Image

So it turns out that the trigger ring on the flywheel let loose, shattered the bell housing and smashing one of the turbo return lines. It's seems as though the engine is still good. Did a compression check just spinning it over by hand and got consistent readings for just turning it by hand. I think the flywheel let go so quick then engine locked up immediately saving the valves. I will do a leak down test to be certain though.

A few pics:

And it runs again!

So the K-sport suspension has since went to SHIT (I will highly recomend against K-sport to anyone) and I have a new suspension to go in. Bilstein sports and H&R sport springs. I am over the coil-over crap and just want something "reliable" for this car. I just ordered a set of control arms and should be tackling this project possibly this weekend.

Also, I am looking to get rid of my front ECS "993tt" BBK calipers as they are leaking and were JUNK right out of the box (hate ECS). I am looking for OEM 993's or calipers that will fit in the same brackets (so I can continue to use the current rotors). The leaking brake fluid has ruined the finish on my CH's :wah: . Excuse to have them re-coated when the leak is resolved.

I didn't realize all that happened to the S4. Nice save! That is one of the few times when a failed part is actually a good thing!

Yeah man! I really lucked out. Too bad I replaced it with a billet steel one. Won't be saving me next time however I'm just hoping there isn't a next time. I rarely drive the car anyway most likely because I know it'll break. I am slightly excited to put new suspension in it tomorrow and I'm searching for some Big reds/blacks as we speak though.

If you find used D2S8 calipers grab them... Those will be PnP with your bracket... Audi OEM part number too, even though they are genuinely made by Brembo...

Thanks for the info. They look to be twice as much as the Porsche ones. I need to find a used set somewhere...stupid B5 is taking away from the 200 funds!

Just ordered a full set of control arms. Just need to find some calipers to make this ride mechanically sound. Worst case scenario, I'll be buying some brand new 928GTS calipers (really cutting into the 200 fund :bs: )

Nice to see some B5 S4 love! These really are special cars and require a special owner - someone with a lot of patience, deep pockets and most importantly, other vehicles to drive :D

I just upgraded the brakes on mine:
-used set of D2 S8 Brembos on fleabay, $300
-new set of seals and dust boots, f+r, $20
-Centric/StopTech Powerslot B6 S4 345mm rotors, $200
-StopTech B7 RS4 stainless front lines, $45
-Apikol 993TT/928 GTS brackets*, $260
-EBC Yellowstuff pads, f+r, $250
-Apikol 300mm B6 S4 rear brake kit (brackets, rotors, stainless lines), $290
(*993TT brackets need 1mm milled off upright mounting surface to center S8 caliper over rotor)

Well under $1500 for big brakes f+r, and the car is transformed, even more so after changing the EBD to RS4 settings in Vagcom. At some point in the future I may upgrade to floating rotors but for now I am very happy with their performance.
2005 A4 Ultrasport - K04'd, AEB head, GIAC tuned, still pokey
2001 TT 225 quattro Roadster - Stage 2+, looking for B&M shifter
2001 S4 - Tial 770R'd 3.1 stroker coming

I need to find a deal like that!!! All I need is the calipers! If you guys come across a set please let me know.

What are the RS4 EBD vag-com settings you speak of? Not familiar.

Basically log into your ABS controller with 09595 as your login, then recode the controller with 04295 as your soft coding (it *should* currently be set at 04395). This adjusts the EBD (electronic brake distribution, aka bias) for big brakes... the results (at least in my case with the 300mm rears) is much more neutral braking with less skitter from the front and less wallowing from the back.

I currently have big brakes in the rear and I have notice the the back end gets a little tail happy when on the brakes hard. So this VCDS change would be opposite from what I want, correct? Do you know if this coding has more tweaking that can be done? IE change it to maybe 04195 to give more front bias?

Nope, actually, the RS4 code increases bias to the front. Like you just mentioned, the stock S4 code is too biased to the rear. Skitter and wallowing... guess I should learn some proper technical braking terms, eh? :D

Haha, well then I might decide against that coding unless I want to end up in the woods. My main concern is to get the front calipers addressed asap. If you guys come across a set, please let me know.

Side note, I changed the transmission fluid today with synchromesh like many of you run and it does seem to be a bit better. Still not perfect but an improvement is always good. Of course, while changine the fluid I notice several more issues...these car suck. Both inner CV boots have what looks like a little pin hole in each and has sprayed a tiny line of grease into the cv shields. Also, it looks as though the input shaft may be leaking, that or the rear main seal. FML.

Other than that, I have the parts in route to me to install my new front suspension. Maybe I'll be able to complete that this weekend.

Now I have to decide if I want to let the S4 have these treats or move them over to the 200 and put S4 back to stock....

So tempting! The HP2's really work well on the 200. Far better then they ever felt on the S4 and much better yet then the S4 with the current 993's. I'll have mull it over.
