Re: roortube's '93 S4...now with pics
Nice Rob!
Re: roortube's 3 musketeers
Life is crazy right now. I'd have loved to make it to Carlisle with the S4, but just couldn't do it. Remember the built motor that I worked so hard on? Don't own it anymore. It was great, but was traded to a friend for an item that I've disclosed to a few, but will post up when this whole thing works out. I'm currently working on returning the S4 to bone stock, and have sold it to an employee. It'll be delivered with brand new brakes, a completely rebuilt stock engine, south bend OFE clutch, 034 street density mounts, and a CAI. We're almost done with the return to stock. Musketeer #1
I picked up a 200 20v Avant months back from the same friend who will receive the built motor installed in his ES2 built coupe, but the 200 had a bad motor due to the complete lack of a rod bearing in cyl #1. That motor is back together and nearly ready to be installed in the, which he has purchaced back at a fair price, considering the work going into making it a runner again. Musketeer #2
This left me with a pile of UrS upgrade parts that I could either sell (sorry Jason...) or find a car for. Last week I flew to Buffalo and drove home in a UrS6 avant. I was able to cover the cost of the car, the flight, the hotel, the title, tax, registration, and inspection with what I sold the S4 and the 200 for (including what I paid for the 200), so I come out just a bit ahead. Musketeer #3
Here's where things get interesting...
The S4 begins with a build motor, upgraded turbo, header, exhaust, intercooler, ignition, fuel pump, etc, etc, etc. It was sold as stock. The S6A is stock, but is receiving all of the upgrade parts from the S4. The 200 had a bad motor, but we pulled that for rebuild a few weeks ago.
Wednesday last week I drove the S6A 400 miles home from Buffalo. Thursday we pulled the motor. Since then, we've been transferring all of the stock parts from the S6 to the S4. It's nearly ready to turn over to the new owner. Tomorrow we'll install the stock exhaust and drive it.
That's right, I currently have 3 old Audi's that at one point last week were completely dismantled, and are in the process of being rebuilt. The 200 20v avant just needs to have the motor installed and it's done. The S4 needs the exhaust installed and it's done. The S6 avant that I'll be keeping is the last on the list. It's the fuel pump, ignition, and ECU is installed, along with the wide band and exhaust, but the engine needs to be built a bit and the clutch is in the mail. Then it will go back together. I'm too damn tired right now, and we've been working too hard to stop to take pics, but I have tomorrow off work and will try to take some pics of the remaining carnage in the morning before beginning.
A HUGE MEGA thanks goes out to my buddy Sean (HerrDr) for the help. This man has put in probably 30 hours of unassisted help this past week, in addition to the time that I've been able to work on this stuff when I wasn't at work or doing family stuff. With out his help this would have taken months. Sean, you rock and I owe you big buddy!!
Also huge thanks to my wife Brynne, who understands that this is a sickness, and that I will hopefully get better in the near future.

were taken by my buddy Sean, who has been a tremendous help in this whole process. Since then, the garage has been cleaned up and organized a lot. The bottom end has been assembled for the 200 20v avant, which is awesome. The head is ready to go, I just need a head gasket and it can go back together. I also need to drop the turbo off with the owner so he can send it to evergreen for a rebuild. at some point the oil feed line was totally blocked with orange rtv, and killed the bearings. no wheel to housing contact though, so hopefully it's rebuildable.
The S6 avant is somewhat in limbo now, forcing me to drive the M5 daily, which I really don't like doing because I had restored it to such high standard. I picked up a south bend ssx clutch for it, and am thinking about a JB flywheel, but don't know about the daily driveability of this combo. (Ed???) I'm also waiting on a quote on rods and pistons. I'm ready to pay for some DM I beams, but may be able to work a good package deal with some pistons as well. If this happens I'm going to jump on the JB flywheel, balance the whole thing, and convert my head to solid lift. It may then get dry sump. I may also just go with a tall deck block and crank, with DM rods and upgraded pistons and keep the head hydro and stock oiling system. This may be less expensive and more daily driveable, which is the ultimate goal.
Once the motor is back in the 200 and it is in it's new owners hands we'll work on getting my "old" (1000 miles or so) built motor into the coupe owned by the same guy so I can get my new toy. I hope to have this all done by the end of the summer, but we'll see about that. Time is short these days, and Sean may be unavailable to help for a bit. Here's hoping things work out buddy!!

Re: roortube's 3 musketeers
So in the last few months all 3 cars have been completed. The S4 has been delivered to it's new owner who has been using it as his only car and first Audi since the end of May. The 200 avant was rebuilt and it's owner Ben has been enjoying it for a few weeks now. I've had the S6 on the road for a bit over a week, and tomorrow it will be getting it's 1000 mile oil change. Current build spec is:
JE 8.5:1 pistons
Pauter rods
ACL coated bearings
ARP head and main studs
.5mm oversize valves
high rate valve springs
titanium retainers
ported and polished head
7A cams
South Bend SSX clutch
JB racing flywheel
complete balance and blue print of engine
Iroz MS tube header and down pipe
GT3071r w/ Tial vband housing .63
034 DP back exhaust
Iroz MS large plenum intake manifold
034 bored throttle body
034 high output coils w/ Magnacor wires
034 street density engine and trans mounts w/ poly snub mount and bracket
034 silicone for EVERY hose under the hood (except vac lines)
034 catch can
Apikol FMIC
Apikol rear diff mount and cross member bushings
relayed Bosch 044 fuel pump
Eurospec adjustable FPR
034 modified 3071r tune
42lbs injectors
stock brakes
stock worn ass suspension
half bald 205/60-15 snow tires
The last 3 are a problem. I have some Big Reds and brackets, just need to get pads, rotors, and hoses to address that problem. I've ordered some Conti DWS tires to go on a set of Fuchs wheels I have laying around. I'm still up in the air about suspension. I'm not sure if I want to keep stock ride height and just get some Bilstein HD's, or do the Bilstein/HR combo, or go for coil overs. The difference in price between shocks/springs and coil overs is pretty close to a programmable EMS like the rip chip or VEMS. I'd love to put a bigger turbo on this thing sooner rather than later. I'll try to snap and post some pics tomorrow when the weather is better.

That sounds great until the end of the list
Should be fun but will really be something with brakes, susp and a big turbo.

I still have a few things to tidy up underhood, like spark plug wire routing, possibly repaint the valve cover, and minor stuff like that, but it's been running great. It did grenade the cooling fan last tuesday resulting in a cut radiator hose, but no other damage. Fortunately, it's been cold enough here that I can continue to drive the car while a replacement arrives. I've been thinking about replacing the clutch fan setup with an electric fan, but haven't decided on which one to use yet. I'm also planning on upgrading the stock oil cooler to a setrab 21 row that I have on a shelf in the garage. I'll mount it where the stock intercooler used to live. The Apikol front mount means that the hydraulic fluid cooler doesn't fit up front any more, so I have it clamped to the driver side of the subframe. A low profile cooler will soon be in place in front of the AC condenser behind the hood grill.
I need new tires for the a set of Fuchs I have. This will allow me to upgrade the brakes to Big Reds, already in hand with brackets. I've been running Conti DWS tires on a few cars (my old UrS4, the wifes C5 S6, and my UrQ). I know these tires well, but have been thinking of some Bridgestone RE960AS's this time around. Anybody have experience with them?

Progress is always good and way to keep being motivated and not overwhelmed. That IM from Hank is sweet. Thinking about getting one myself in the future along with his EM.
Re: roortube's UrS6 Avant...now with a few pics!
the motivation is a prick near my work with a murcielago who needs to be out accelerated by an old wagon. dude is a jerk...im gonna get him to 160 before Im done.
yeah, hank makes some sweet stuff. the pair of manifolds compliment each other nicely and sound incredible.

Hrmmm. We might need to get you into a 35r turbined something to get a 4000lb Avant to out accelerate a Merci!

Re: roortube's UrS6 Avant...now with a few pics!
Hank, what ever it takes man. Tuesday I'm spending the day cleaning up my M5 to prep it for sale because the only way I can afford this is to sell a car, and as much as I love that one it's the logical choice. We're also stocking and selling nitrous kits and filling bottles at work now, so if it comes to that I'm gonna gas this sucker. Last year I saw this prick in his pretty orange Lambo on the road and we had a run. He didn't give it enough throttle at first so I got him with in reasonable speeds for the traffic. Then he passed a couple cars in the left shoulder while giving me the finger out the window. If I see him again I'm gonna take him, so long as it's safe. I have his plate and a friend in the Maryland State Police, so I've thought about a reverse look up and invitation to a long open, very closed road. I need to bring it if that happens.
All that said, When the M5 sells, this car gets some more love, the wifes car gets new control arms and struts, and the UrQ gets a 20vt conversion...engine already on the stand and in the works. Hank, you know you'll be hearing from me for some goodies for this... If there's any $$$ left after this stuff, the Lotus will get an AAN. I haven't seen that conversion done before, but with a bit more angle on the engine or a bubble in the hood I think it's possible.
I'll get pics of the UrQ, C5 S6, and M5 up soon, now that I know how.

Nice! That Iroz IM is pure sweetness.
Re: roortube's UrS6 Avant...now with a few pics!
Dunno why, but my car must think it's air cooled or something. Last week the fan grenades and cuts the small middle rad hose. Tonite the upper hose mysteriously gives way. I ended up with no coolant and an 034 silicone upper hose with a 2" gash in it near where the small line splits off for the coolant reservoir. The rest of the hose is fine, but the cut dumped the coolant. It happened all at once, and I was able to pull over and shut the engine off with in a few seconds. I rolled into a Goodyear parking lot and let the engine cool off. A while later I was back on the road after using a tire patch to repair the hose. A replacement is in the mail tomorrow. I did a compression test tonite and everything seems to be in order, so it must have just been a weak hose. It was 3 years old and may have been nicked a bit when the fan disintegrated last week. Who knows?

it's better to have all these little things show up now within the 1000mile "break in" period, tho,,,
Re: roortube's UrS6 Avant...now with a few pics!
Very nice Rob, great engine spec but yeah you need a bigger turbz to kill the lambo.
I'm really digging that im, looks fantastic. I agree ed, first one I've seen as well.
Oh, and VEMS!!

Re: roortube's UrS6 Avant...now with a few pics!
To my knowledge it is the first IMS intake on a UrS, but I could be wrong...and yes, the thing is friggin sweet. There are a couple small fittment issues that I let Hank know about and should be adjusted for future production, but nothing major at all. As always his fab skills are insane, as is the fact that (AFAIK) he produced this with out a car to test fit it in. Techs at work were amazed by the quality of work, but flat out didn't believe me that it was done with out a car to test. Stunning. I may have also had the first Iroz header on a UrS last year with my S4. The one in these pics was Hanks own prototype off of his UrQ, which I had installed and running late December '11/early Jan '12. Hank would know if this was the first one better than I, but I have a text message from him asking me about some fittment issues where he stated that I was the closest to install of the UrS customers. That was mid December '11.
Dont worry guys, I'm very clear that a bigger turbo is in order before going lambo hunting....it will be in the bay soon enough. I must address the brakes and suspension before I feel comfortable putting any more power into it. I"m thinking of a billet 35r or GTX30r or similar. It'll hopefully run flex fuel, as there's an E85 filling station near work. I was talking to Sam today, and I think that my mind is made up that the Rip Chips will control stuff. I like the idea of having a cruise map, a high boost map, and a high boost map for E85 for the 3071r, as well as a map for a bigger turbo on E85 w/ NO2 easily accessable. The VBand housing makes turbo swaps a snap, so I may just have 2 on hand. The stock knock and idle controls being retained with the Rip Chips are a big plus too, as this car is my primary driver, so I can pop the chips in with a base map that matches my current one exactly, and tune from there.
In other news, the power steering cooler and some hose is now in hand to fix the drip from the stock cooler lines and get the cooler off of the sub frame. I brought a few AN fittings home from work today for the oil cooler setup, and found some braided stainless hose in my garage. I need to source the adapter fittings to go from the filter housing to the AN hose. Thanks for the thread on QW Ed, that's going to make it much easier.
My tires should be arriving at my shop soon so I can get the snows off and a decent tire on. That leaves brakes and suspension from my must do list. Brakes will come first as the expensive parts are already on hand. I also scored a set of very lightly used Hawk HPS pads for the bog reds today from a dude who decided they weren't aggressive enough for his track rat and went with some sort of Ferodo pad instead. Cost me a pack of smokes and a 6 pack of good beer. Win. As far as rotors are concerned, I've typically used the cheapest white box blank rotor I could get my hands on and planned to change them frequently. A guy at work is trying to convince me to go with some DBA 4000's, which I'm sure are nice, but are much more expensive. I ran 2 piece rotors on my Mk4 and they were nice. I found a set of DBA 5000's for just a bit more than the 4k's, and if I'm going to spend money on rotors that's the way I'll go. Anyone have any experience with them?
I'm also in the market for a used bilstein sport/HR or Eibach combo for the UrS cars, if anybody knows of this stuff for sale in good shape.
Sorry for the wordy and pic free post, but I type fast and it's a pita for me to load pics still. They will come more frequently as it warms up and things begin to change here.

Big Reds now installed on the front for more stopping. Dyno appointment scheduled with Marc next Thursday to tune motronic for a "35r turbined something" for more going courtesy of Hank. I'll post pics and dyno graphs when its done. I can't wait.

Sounds like I might be calling out sick next Thursday if this is happening at EFI-X... I need the motivation anyhow...

You probably won't need to call out, unfortunately... I'm leaving the DC area around 6am and driving there for an evening appointment. Then drive home on Friday. I'm having a car show and dyno at work on Sunday, so I want to come correct. I'm sure Marc will help me do so. He's going to tune for 93 octane on FIC 1100's and a GTX3576r.

This is what I'm curious to see as it closely resembles plans with my car... I get out at 7pm, so I'm sure I'll drop in during the heat of battle...
PS. Looks like it'll be a BigMAF Motronic tune, as I don't see mention of any other ecu in the whole thread...
