Block is finally disassembled! Pistons look great, but I'm thinking I should have teh crank polished - opinions? Pics below will show the crank and a couple of the bearings. Now begins the cleaning stage...

have it measured, then see if you can polish it. it should be within spec. but yeah, polishing isn't expensive, i had it done to my zermatt crank for like $40

Pardon the ignorance: Does polishing a crank have any purpose?

I just sort of feel like giving the bearings a fresh surface to work with

Mine looked just like that when I tore it down. I put it back together with good parts and spin it to 8200. It's got nearly 20k miles on it since the rebuild. Polishing can't hurt, but I doubt it's necessary.

glad to hear you had similar wear and that it's nothing to be concerned with. I guess it'll come down to (like everything else) cost. If its something like $40, I'll probably just do it for baller status :P

it only takes them a couple minutes, when I have seen it done, they just put in in a lathe, turn it really slow and go over each journal with a crank polishing band. Shouldnt cost to much at all.

Heres a crank for that bad boy. Just slap on some stiffer springs. Wan't to build a Stroker?

 Sorry I just had to, couldn't resist. Wonder what this would cost for a simple polishing eh? hehe.

Like Derek says, pressure wash it, have someone measure it, and polish it. These cranks are pretty tough, those scratches will polish right out and if done properly looks mirror smooth. The bearings have lots of crap imbeded in them.

Made a quick pass through the engine bay with some simple green and soapy water and got some pretty good results! Yay southern cars!

I forgot to take a real before picture, so here's a passenger side halfway clean pic (note the driver's side rail)

Image

And the after pics - I still have a lot of heavy cleaning to do on the subframe and tranny however

Oh yea, and the reason I pulled the motor, the bad valve cover gasket :P
