I havent checked but I think its somewhat obvious which side the thicker flange does on when you are eyeballing the diff in relation to the input shaft.
That said, I wouldn't mind verifying.
Yea, it might have been your post I saw that in Chris. Im going to have to get creative (read ghetto) if IM going to turn this thing down. My good buddy / mob boss is way too busy to mess with this silly part, plus his lathe is outta commission...

If you have or have access to a drill press, you can also rig up a ghetto vertical lathe and clamp a fixed cutting edge with a ground up piece of steel. Since its plastic, it should cut pretty easily and you can keep the cutting forces low.
I've done it before for something else...

Sean, the lathe might have enough left in the bearing to turn a couple of delrin pieces, but you might have to come over and be the operator. I will be home working on Her Urq in the morning. If you are off and available swing on by.
Hey and if you come over, could you bring your brake pressure bleeder and the slotted strut socket/wrench?

i think i took a flapper wheel on an end grinder to the inside of the aluminum mount, too, to get rid of crap and make it as smooth as possible. same i did to the control arms. it polishes it right on up.
but i do remember fighting it to get it in as well.

So, necessity being the mother of invention, this was my circumference reduction machine I made today. I had some 120 grit emory cloth do the duties. It took an extra set of hands but it actually went pretty easy. The mount really was about .020 large as was mentioned above, which seemed hard to believe at the time but I measured it too. I brought the mount down to .005 over and then froze them.
The halves went in like buttah, but I couldn't get them back out, I think it'll be fine. As per Aarons pic above I set the offset accordingly.

I bench assembled the rear section. Flipped my rear tie rods to the proper orientation, yea they were flipped the whole time I owned it. Of all the things that were done right on this car prior to me getting it, I was shocked to see such a newbie mistake had been made. Oh well...
I don't know why dropping the ass end out of this car had been such a mental block for me, it was really one of the easier projects I have tackled on a daggum quattro. The whole assembly balanced securely on the jack while I lifted it all in.

Sorry for not media blasting some of that hardware, maybe next time...
Today was a long day, I started with a diff on the bench, ended up with the whole rear end assembled and in the car. All four corners are complete at this point. Tomorrow I will make the rounds and torque everything. All that is left in the back is to re install the sway bar, change brake pads, and install the new rotors. The front end just needs the sway bar connected at the control arms.
I went with the 350lb 2bennett's in the front.

The rear is the 400lb Suspension Specialties

By the way - Im loving the CompBrake top mounts in the rear. So much easier than fiddle f*cking around with the stock retaining ring...
Tomorrow is roll bar installation - but thats on the other pill.

Nice 18v lathe!! I was wondering why you didn't make it over to turn them down. You look like you have been way busy and it's looking good. You in town this week also?

Re: I took the BLUE Pill. (Sean's Helios 83 UrQ)
August 30th it went up in the air, October 4th it landed. Two work trips fell right in the middle of it.
Done:
Front subframe R&R w/ solid mounts
Struts removed and broken down
Rear subframe (spare) stripped, seam welded, and painted ready to go
Control arm bushes removed
Press in all eight Delrin CA bushings
Remove / grind stock spring perches
Replace one ball joint boot
Prepare uprights for coil-over transition
Installed 'new' rear subframe w/ solid mounts
R&R rear diff mount (delrin)
Weld up the support rings for the threaded sleeves
Assemble the coil-overs
Install new rear brake pads and rotors
Full system power bleed incl. clutch
Next up:
Top off tank with 100 octane
Drive it like I stole it
Feels good to have it 'done' as I have an all-nighter ahead of me with non car-related event projects. Thanks for the advice along the way, surely made my life easier. I'm sure I'll have more questions once I start tweaking the suspension - I found a set of scales I can use

Re: I took the BLUE Pill. (Sean's Helios 83 UrQ)
So after missing two events, I finally mounted the rear AM Cars fiberglass rally bumper. It was time, I couldn't stand the thought of getting another scratch before it even makes to to the car.
I ran out of daylight so this is the best pic I got before leaving town again. Better pics to follow - I promise...

My tailpipe is getting longer with age.
Who's car is lighter NOW Hank? (without driver) lol

Re: I took the BLUE Pill. (Sean's Helios 83 UrQ)
My Full exhaust weighs less then then those exhaust tips
.... We could have a weigh off, but I think you would be sad at the end of the day
I am jealous of the fiberglass bumpers though. I would like to get some one day.

Hank, there might be some interest to do another group buy again. Should put the feelers out there...
As promised I took a couple pics tonight, just in time as the sun was setting quickly. Honestly, I have been waiting to see the car outside the garage all week. I finished the bumper just before heading out of town for work.
The old:

The new:

I need to work on my de-reflectorization back there but Im liking these AM Bumpers more and more. I might not have taken 10" off the wheelbase, but I know I have shortened the car by a good 8" and huge amounts of weight gone.

And here is one just showing the stance of the car post coil-over conversion. I may come down another half inch, just looking for some opinions really... I don't really want it to look slammed, but who knows. I wan't to get it to a height Im happy with before I take it in for the alignment.

Looks better everytime I see it. gotta be nice taking the "ping-pong table off the back. Or is that the Nimitz? I love mine now that they are cropped, but a group buy would be very tempting

I say leave it there and widen the stance 10-15mm, not that it matters what I say. Nice car.
