Ohhh yeaaaaa

Im going to storm though the suspension and get the thing back on the road. I can't have two cars up in the air in my garage and still have room to do all the dirty work, grinding, welding etc.

I need to order:
one more set of solid subframe bushings
one more set of delrin control arm bushings
one set of track density rear top mounts
one quick ratio steering rack 8) MAYBE - I was immdiately spoiled by the quick rack in the Coupe...

Couldn't you just get a steering quickener?
quattro v1.0

Post by quattro v1.0 »

I have heard speak of those quickeners, but don't know enough about them. From what I understand they actually make the ratio quicker than the 034 rack which is at the edge of drivability to be honest - but I still like it. I do think that anything quicker than the 034 rack would be just-too-much...

gotta hate looking at life that way, huh.....

feels like you have more money than time.

what i wouldnt give for a couple weeks off or just a track day (june 7th) or three.....

You can get different level quickeners though. I saw one that was 1.5 to 1, which would make the 3.5(?) turns to lock a more manageable 2 1/3 to 1.

So, I need to update my comment to "my struts are in A country" not this one, but a country... Called shox.com wondering why they hadn't been delivered yet and they pushed me back a few more weeks...

I did drop off the front seats at the upholstery shop on my lunch break yesterday. The drivers side bolster finally let go and I couldn't bring myself to keep driving it. Not only because a tore up bolster makes it look like a junker, I dodn't want to ruin the foam and cause more expense and work at the upholsterer.

They are color matching the dark brown and they are getting done in real leather just as original.

The struts are going to put me on a deadline, I had visions of driving the car to Monterey for the Historic races in August.

one quick ratio steering rack - I was THIS close... Maybe next time.

I saw the sample leather and it looked like an awesome match to the original super-dark brown. If I actually have a weekday in Vegas I can pick them up from the upholstery shop.

So, the two-week upholstery job is now at 5 weeks, they promised the seats TODAY. I'll visit them at lunch time.

The 6-8 week lead time on the Koni's is now at about 13 from what memory tells me. Thanks for having a sale AFTER I ordered my struts Koni. ...and then building everyone elses sh*t before mine.

I need some serious recon time in the garage before any work gets done. Ever since the Coupe S-Line arrived I have had 8 extra wheel/tire sets in there along with a set of wheels from the Scorpion, and boxes of suspension parts tossed randomly about. I have been toying with the idea of a portable AC unit, I doubt it would keep it cool out there but I think it might take the edge off the 105-110° temps.

Heck, 85° last week in Oregon was great...

John, you don't need a rack, not for years anyway ;O)

Maybe not that long. I'm heading out to the garage right now. It has a swamp cooler that has been blowing all night and is nice and cool unlike some garages I know of in Las Vegas. It was only 112deg yesterday by the way. I was supposed to be up early to change the timing belt on Her Urq since it is outside, but I never made it. Oh well.

No luck on the struts, 15 weeks and counting on the f'ing Konis... Is there another option besides Bilsteins??

The seats that were due to be finished Wednesday are running into the next monday, July 5th, a 6-week long 2week job...

The good news is: Home Depot has a decent sale on portable air conditioners.
The better news is: By the time I get all my parts for this pig, I wont need the air conditioner.

So I checked with the upholstery shop, going to be a few more days... I told them I'm leaving town again so they have two weeks - not a minute longer. I did see what they had done and it looks awesome. The holdup is matching the synthetic material for the backs with the leather of the seating surfaces. Once I saw what they were dealing with and the efforts they were going thru to make them perfect for me I softened up on them a bit.

On a lighter note, the day after shox.com told me two more weeks I got a quantum ship for my struts. They arrived yesterday WooWooo

I should have about everything to tear into my project - except time. Im headed out for another 10 day work trip.

Ahhhh 1983 with that new car smell...

Here is where it comes from:

10 weeks wait, most of which they spent ordering and comparing samples, well worth it though. The shop did me proud. They look a little browner than original, but IM ok with it - alot of it is because they are out in the bright sun. If I can't live with it, I will pull out the back seat and have them make me some matching padded panels and leave the rear seat out all together... More room for a roll bar right?

The craftsmanship is awesome, highly recommend these guys now that the dirty work has been done and they know which combination of materials to order next time.

Those look great. The quote I heard from my Dad, did that include both seats? Is this the shop by Wolf's?

Leather was twice the price of the highest quality vinyl, and that was for the pair... The car deserved leather, so I bit the bullet.

That seems fair. That is a bit of work to redue that quilt work. Shop by wolfs?

What are they charging for the rears in leather?

Yea, they are the folks right by Wolff, he has given them a fair amount of work over the years so they are pretty familiar with VAG seats. I haven't even talked with them about the rears, but I wouldnt redo the rear seats, simply make some panels to replace the rear seats and have them upholstered to match the fronts. This car wont be hauling people while I own it, just hauling ass.. lol Actually it would make it nicer for the dogs back there too...

Before any of that I need to let my fun-money build back up a bit. I have spent as much as some recent UrQ's have sold for on this car in the last few months and Im just now starting the project. Next up is the whirlwind suspension rehab. I have everything I need to get it rolling, I just can't have the car out of commission very long. I had visions of driving it to Monterey for the Historic Races - I should just accept an early defeat on that one right now.

I can not believe you were not tempted to go black to match the dash. :)

I'll take your rears off you hands :)

When I get my loaner seats back from you after doing duty in that a**-haulin urq of yours, will they then make my Urq faster?

I'm with Hank though Sean, I would have had to consider black, but will reserve my decision until I see them in person. From the pictures they look great. I would have to have a back seat also and I cringe thinking about two pitbulls in my car. :o :D

I think when you see them in person you will really like the dark brown - which is better than the two tone black and blue that Wolff was trying to convince me of... I mean dark brown was original, and you know how I like to keep my car original *evil grin* Speaking of loaner seats, ever see an UrQ with three front seats? There is one in my garage right now lol Are you home this evening John?

C'mon, my dogs never once annoyingly asked "are we there yet?"
