i live that new NW logo much better than the welded ones.
looks professional now, just like his welds.... very nice.

good looks on the time, bad looks on the shim. but overall very good results.

thanks guys. videos, well lets say i am compiling data ;)

The lash seams to be correct, the only way for that sash cap, to fall out, valve is not closing in time, what spring rates r you running

just please never let it be said i am not doin work out this way. PLEASE. this was yesterday where i spent the greater part of the day processing the videos from IFO, and troubleshooting a non-working dryer.

while also squeezing in putting the car up in the air in the trailer, dropping the trans by myself in there, and taking it apart. its all ready to go back together just waiting on a circlip.

while its out i am gonna cut more off the top of it, too!

Re: Aarons Drag CQ: 5-29 trans out and apart

Post by speeding-g60 »

there is a circlip that holds the inner race in for the input shaft. in a six geared transm there is a cover and 6th gear physically holds it down. in a 5 speed, nothing covers it.

i opted to build it as if it were a 5 speed, nothing blocking or covering it. just built without 5th gear.

and after assembling/un assembling about 5-6 times each way, the circlip has lost its holding power apparently.

when i took it apart, this is what i saw. and this allows the input shaft to flop around and flex and whatever.

new circlip is here in the AM and i will be putting a 6th gear in there as insurance. now i have to find the motivation to actually put it back in the car!

this is how it came apart, the race floating in there.

Image

and this circlip i am pointing at, goes in that groove above the inner race below, that is now back in place.

Yikes! Hopefully there was no damage to the bearing! Those bearings are astronomically priced.

When I rebuilt mine I should have opted for new clips as well just for piece of mind. Iirc, they are pretty pricey for a silly little clip though. Right?

aaaand, the trans went back in after Joey put it back together. we have had this gearbox apart and together many times now, and are pretty well familiar with it. he reassembled it as i had to fly to Idaho for a jobwalk. upon my return, i picked it up. and the new gear oil.

talk about expensive, buying things at the final last minute. $240 shipped for 6 qts of Motul Gear FF Competition 75w-140. $25 each, then lots of next day rapage. the gear oil is a vibrant blue color, and even more stinky than most normal gear oils!

at this time, i also got a short stick of B7 allthread and made alignment studs for trans install/removal. they are also to replace the bolts that secure it. and it makes a big difference.... especially under the car in the trailer. i red loctite'd them in, and put a nut on the back side of the couple that go thru open mounting holes. worked perfect.

put the trans back in, fired right up. car is on the trailer floor, tied down and awaiting the track. we went to the private rental Monday but it was a rain out.

drove to Vegas instead. now just waiting patiently for a day to actually drive the car.... patiently waiting.

did a little something to protect the turbo from inhaling stuff. IKEA Racing for the WIN!!!! and lopped off more of the bellhousing, and Derek came over to TIG on the filler plate.

Image

i know, it looks small. but it isnt. 5.5" OD opening for the compressor. and my helper was not happy that i bought this to chop it up.

and on a final note, i figured out what is up with my launch / clutch valve setup. during testing, it wasnt slowing down the clutch release as it should, and we thought maybe it was due to the multiple back-to-back launches heating up the Sintered Iron clutch discs and making them stickier. the hotter they get the more they grip. but, i have it sorted out now.

Parker claims the needle valve is non directional, but i have discovered otherwise. and i of course have it in backwards.

that is the last thing to do, flip the valve around and re-bleed the clutch. we will do this when it next comes out of the trailer. i may flip it now, and bleed it later.

i sure as heck hope there is no more of this action! but this is the reason for the screen, again.

Hey Aaron, keep an eye on that screen. I'm sure you're under the hood a lot more than me, but I had that same exact strainer (on a way smaller scale) on my k24, and after daily driving it for a month it started to suck in and was actually touching the tip of the turbo shaft!! You're turbo is bigger and probably sucks way harder, no pun intended. :D Just a heads up

yeah. rule of thumb here is that i use 3/32" SS Tig wire and make a cross supporting the screen. every one i have made has had the same style support.
