Ed's 1991 CQ: Progress!

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
that's a good goal to shoot for. Yeah I don't think the pistons will go south unless you experience some extreme pre-detonation.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
Intercooling, E85 and 5 coils should help

Indeed. Real curious what you come up with for WG plumbing...
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
I think we may have to see what Hank figures out
I could mess with it for x hours, time is money, but shipping him the turbine housing seems like a better use of resources. The only thing that would stop me is the prospect of redoing it in the event of a better manifold (I guess I'd just trade up like Chris is.

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
I've always kinda liked that fact that you're staying with the 7a...

Thanks! After all the talking I have done I feel the need to prove that a 7a is a good option up to the rod limit of all the 20v I5s. Stage two will have a built bottom end which levels the playing field.

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
That little extra displacement doesn't hurt either, especially when big boost is getting the most out of those added cc's. I about built a 7A with the idea of machining the tops of the pistons a bit to lower C/R. As far as block, head, crank, bearings, oil pump, and even rods, the 7A doesn't give up anything. The pistons may not be able to take the abuse of detonation as well, but lets face it, if the tune isn't good for big boost, detonation can eat through oem, aftermarket wisecos, Je's, or pretty much anything else that happens to be in the way of the pressures and heat of detonation.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
It will be interesting to see how she does! I'll be keeping ~stock compression to increase VE and off boost power. V1.0 will be about 8-10 PSI.
My main concern is loosing a ring land from cyl psi (not detonation or preignition).

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
I think that they will easily take that and especially at only 10-15 psi of boost. 30psi might be different, but even there if there isn't any detonation they might survive. A lot of the equation depends upon what turbo is pushing the 30psi, how efficient the turbo is, and how well the rest of the intake and exhaust flows. 30psi of 2871 is not the same in flow as a 42r. The holset ought to be able to push it some though I would think.

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
which holset is that? keep in mind, I know nothing about them...yet.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
It is Loxxrider's old H1C which are about the same as an HX35 and ~60#/min IIRC. Another factor before BBQ2 is the clutch & transmission. It will be stock unless I decide to throw a generic 6 puck in and deal with whatever chatter I get.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
Yep, 56mm H1C with 12cm exhaust housing from an HX35.

!!!!

Huge thanks to Hank for squeezing me in so that I have a chance of getting all this done in the next 3 weeks!
I can't wait to see it in person

Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
It looks good. I like how the turbo outlet is now v-band. It makes it sooooo much nicer to work on.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
It has a nice clean look that way. It would be cool to take to bolt bosses off but that is not making anything faster. Bullseye makes a v-band HX35 housing.
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
Honestly, the bolts are not htat visible from the top. Put one of htose blankets over the holset uglyness, and leave the oversized compressor housings holsets are famous for!!! The blanket would likely hide everything but the beautiful vband connection on!
Re: Ed's 1991 CQ
I have been eyeing those up, HA! The important thing it to get it together! Going to be close :dur:

More pics of the WG setup please. That modified flex pipe is great! I wonder if Hank would be willing to make another small flex like that out of leftovers from the original...

I'll take more when I have it mocked up.

I make the flex couplers from scratch, so the length can be custom.

So AWESOME!! I cant wait to recover from teh diamond buying and getting a turbo in my coupe. Moving in a month to a place with a garage finally so should gain some pace again.
