Re: 1984 Ur-q with 20vt, 6-speed 01E is in!

Post by ralleyquattro »

Just to confuse things a bit more, with stock Ur-q motor mounts (alloy pieces) in their rear most position the transmission mounts would not line up with the subframe mounts.
Only after slotting the engine mounts approx 5-8mm (to the edge of the casting, if you know what I mean) was I able to push the engine back enough to have the transmission mount line up with subframe.

Cheers

Looking good, Martin. You couldn't find the rotor that will work off the shelf, or you couldn't move the caliper out?

That's kind of a pain to have to turn them down every time you need replacement...although it depends how much you'll actually drive the car.

You can run sport quattro rotors (if they are still available?)

Martin - It is looking very good, I will try and come by Saturday to turn it around.

As Mike said above I could use the Sport rotor, but those are $$ are thinner and require machine work anyway. They are too thick on the hub and prevent the hubcentric feature from working and the sport rotor does not have the taper to engage the Ur-q hub as well.

Here are pics of Sport rotors.
http://www.quattro.ca/1985UrqBrakes/85UrqBrakes.htm
I gave up and ran S4TT on my '85 as well and they were much better.

So... these S4TT are much much thicker, readily available and yes, I think you can shave them many many times before they are below original sport q spec.
BTW Machining was free and balancing was $25/rotor for me anyway. SO even cost wise I am way ahead.

Cheers

Got it. I wouldn't go lower than what the spec is on the S4 rotor thickness though...since they are 30mm new I'm guessing wear limit is 28mm?

Anyways, as long as it works for you. So can you fit 15s over this? I'd hope so...

So... no comments on the coil pack location? Anyone else run these on the "dry" side of the firewall?

That is where mine are going Martin. Even if it was wet, the coils are weather packed and sealed. This build is nice!

Yeah, I think it's fine. They will run cooler, but you may be getting a lot more water/snow on them vs them being on the engine side of the firewall. You could build some simple alu cover for them too.

I like the thought of them being out of the way and it seems it makes for a cleaner engine compartment. You may have to make custom wires to get the extra length and still run the wires nice and neat, but you were probably going to anyhow. Do you have a plastic cover still in one piece to cover them if installed on the inside? Can those pieces still be bought?

My 84 hood also has a full non mesh cover under the hood louvers...some older 85-88 jettas do too. It would eliminate immediate water drops, it diverts flow to the outer most louvers.

oh yeah...louvers

I bought a new rain tray few months ago, so that is going to be covering the coils after the install.
The ignition wires I got from 034 are unterminated and VERY long.
Only issue I have is the heartbreak of drilling two holes in the firewall for the wires to go through :frustrated:

I was going to say something about that, but decided that it's not that big a deal. I like it that I'm not the only one that thinks that way however. Where did you buy the new plastic rain tray.....dealer?

Yes, the holes might prove to be too much for my weak heart so I still may shove them in the engine compartment. Keeping the shell original and not cutting anything was my goal from the start. I know, sick isn't it. Craig is probably rolling his eyes now.

Yep, dealer.. it wasn't even that bad, less than $70 for 2 oz. of plastic.. ;)

Bit of an update.
I didn't like the where the turbo ended up with the MTM exhaust manifold so out it came and in it's place the WE Sport Evo is going to be installed, complete with new hot side housing.

Nice Martin. I got one of those rain trays about 5 yrs ago for $17. That was then....
So I didn't se an answer - will those brakes fit under teh 8" Ronals? Your setup has me thinking because I already have a couple sets of used rotors from my S4....

Hi,

Yes, i had the same setup on my '85 Euro. Works very well and is a night and day compared to the stock or even the G60 setup. And most important, fit under the 8" Ronals.

Pics of the manifold in. BTW I needed to raise the engine to be able to install it, the support scasting hits the chassis leg. Not a biggy since I needed to change the mounts to 034 anyways.

Compared to the old one the WE Sport is much much beefier.

And looks great installed.

Not a lot more room than before, but definetly better.

Can't wait to take it for a spin.. ;)
