That jig that my dad made for the watermanifold looks like he did it just for this head, but the truth is that he has done a few heads with the jig in the past. He can do the watermanifold job pretty easily. The 7a heads that he is using already are tapped for the extra exhaust manifold(factory early 7a heads), and with IIc, he doesn't need the CPS unit. That makes the crackless 7a heads more attractive, especially when you can sell crackfree AAN heads for 400 pretty easily these days.

It's amazing what seeing a certain coupe quattro put down ~650whp at the dyno will do for motivation.

Why not to use AAN head, couple broken em studs no big deal to drill, if 7a head is used it will need serious work, water mani, will need to drill and tap 10 exhaust mani holes, no cam position sensor.

Janis, you need to go back a few pages to the head build up. :-) Like Hank said I used the 7A for a few different reasons. It has no cracks between the valves, has all the exhaust studs, was a low mile head, is a cheaper head to port and polish if I got carried away, I don't need the CPS as I'm using stand alone IIc, and I still have the AAN as a back up or I can sell it off to help finance the build. I really don't have but about a couple of hours into the water mani machining. I'm happy with the head.

I'm not sure which 7A heads had the extra exhaust studs, but the head I used has the extra stud holes.

Correct John. Early cars do not have the extra studs on the head. I've had both in my early build CQ (March 1989).

It works on my '90 for ~10PSI with stock compression.

It's more about the weight. So if you have a header support or the like I wouldn't see a problem. Audi did it to support the manifold and/or turbo+manifold, plus keep it from leaking.

I know that lots of people have run a turbo manifold on a head without the extra studs. In my experience, I've seen lots of 20vt and 20vt with broken studs, leaking exhaust, or both. As long as you can keep the manifold from leaking you're good, but I think that it would be easier to do with more studs for more clamping force and closer spacing. A N/A exhaust manifold doesn't see the heat cycling that a turbo manifold does and therefore has less movement and stress on the manifold and studs. I haven't run to many N/A 20v engines but my guess would be that they don't experience as many exhaust manifold gasket failures as the turbo motors do.

The one in the bottom drawer of the stainless toolbox. It is just a cheap HF unit, but works pretty well. It's nice to get to the deep pockets that really needs sand blasting and especially if it is something that can't be hot tanked.

The yoke you sent me fit and worked great, but the 4kq cables that I had seem to be to long by about an inch or so. I fiddled with it for a few hours and in the end needed to get out to the track event so I left them as is. I might still be able to work some more adjustment into the very rusted allthread, but it didn't seem like there were many threads left. While I have the driveline down for the 20vt install I will probably revisit the emergency brakes and cable length. Does anyone know if there are different length emergency brake cables in the 4kqs? The S4 calipers and vented rotors work great along with the G60 fronts.

There was a change in the "pull rod" when they changed to new style cables.

New style 857711345A

You mgiht be able to thread yours and shorten it to fit, or I just pick up new rods from dealer, they are relatively cheap and and still available.

Lets see....since June 1st I've done a 14 12hr day in a row work schedule, had a few days off to recoup and then another 8 day go. I did have a few days off last week and tried to get a little caught up around the place. I did look at the car I must admit, but then proceeded to replace tires on the motorcycle (both rear AND front were corded), rekeyed the entire house front and rear(you never know who might show up looking around), weeded the garden, mowed the lawns, hung a towel rack for the wife, replaced a 5 ton compressor in the house A/C, picked and dried all the apricots off of the tree, glued the desk drawer back together along with three wood chairs, sprayed for both weeds and bugs, and a few other things like take my wife to dinner and such. I did get a little done on the car, but not much. I will try to post something tonight.
