Re: Strange engine failure (not my car for once!)

I'd agree it was knocking. The oil ingestion could be part of that. Ingesting oil significantly advances knocking.

Re: Why do project cars blow up so many turbos?

Yeah, that too. Learn to read a compressor map. Turbos with "HP" ratings are dumb. That's a best case number based on BSFC and pressure ratio, which is a function of engine displacement. Most people with an aftermarket turbo are killing them by over speeding them or over oiling them. Another thing ...

Re: Why do project cars blow up so many turbos?

I would say two things are probably happening. Aftermarket turbos are lower quality than production turbos. They have higher air flow capability, but are lower quality. And....people working on their cars are screwing things up. Reliability = 1/ number of bolts you mess with.

Re: V8 and 5000 Torsion rear diff

What they said above. Put a V8q diff in something that can spin the tires and they explode. I wanted one for my 200 20v until I saw what Sam Stone did to his.

Any good 40 or 50 weight oil is probably where you should be. If it's a hot climate then 50 for sure.

Re: Exhaust system diameter choices

FWIW, a single 3" will support 600whp. That's the reason most people do it. It's easy and good enough for nearly everyone. Tons of cheap (good) mufflers available as well.

Re: Well I've made my decision

A 944 turbo in my mind is much more fun all around...but you have to be content with about 350whp on a stock block or around 550whp on a built motor. People have thrown lots of money at those engines (8v and 16v) and not many have made much over 500whp.
I think the limiting factor is the diff ...

Re: My fuel tank is HOT; Fuel cooling?

What is your fuel pump setup? If you are running a big pump all the time that will really heat the fuel up. If that is the case putting a PWM controller on the pump can help under low load, or running a small pump with a big secondary one that comes on under boost.

If you are running a normal pump ...

I would be weary of 996 engines. Those cars are cheap for a reason.

Re: dual tank fueling idea

It's a wiring issue for sure on an old truck. Why not just replace it all with new good wiring, and two switches running relays for the pumps?
